New Report Addresses Innovation in the Social Sector

Kellogg Foundation
Intentional Innovation: How Getting More Systematic about Innovation Could Improve Philanthropy and Increase Social Impact, a new report published by the Kellogg Foundation in partnership with the Monitor Institute and Clohesy Consulting, is intended to spark a conversation about innovation in the social sector. The report examines the best of current innovation theory and practice, and key ideas about how innovation could become a more consistent and reliable commodity for social good. Conference Focuses on Arts in Education

P. Buckley Moss Foundation for Children's Education: National Education Conference
The P. Buckley Moss Foundation's National Education Conference, "The Creative Mind: Building Foundations That Will Last Forever," brings together educators from across the nation each year. The 2008 conference will feature discussions on techniques, strategies, and lesson plans for incorporating the arts into the curriculum of every child. Together participants and presenters will examine why the arts are not frills but necessary foundations for learning. The conference will also focus on finding new and original methods in teaching children who learn differently. The conference will be held in Staunton, VA, on October 25-27, 2008. Leadership Training Targets Rural Alaska Communities

Beyond Borders: Families in Conflict Workshop
Beyond Borders helps develop healthy and sustainable communities by empowering them to meet the needs of those around them. Beyond Borders is currently focusing on strengthening and developing leaders -- and through them, their communities -- in Alaskan rural communities through the Transforming Leaders program. The Families in Conflict workshop, offered through this program, explores common family dynamics, defines what 'functional' and 'dysfunctional' relationships look like, and examines how healthy families are developed. Participants will learn to help bring healing to the people, relationships, and communities around them by using coaching skills to help others to strengthen their families. Funds for Wildlife and Habitat Protection

SeaWorld & Busch Gardens Conservation Fund
The mission of the SeaWorld & Busch Gardens Conservation Fund is to work with purpose and passion on behalf of wildlife and habitats worldwide, encouraging sustainable solutions through support of species research, animal rescue and rehabilitation, and conservation education. The Fund provides grants in support of wildlife conservation projects conducted by recognized nonprofit organizations and noted scientists throughout the world. Grants generally range from $5,000 to $25,000. The application deadline is December 1, 2008. Requests must be submitted online through the website listed above.

 

Auto Safety and Workforce Training Supported

The CarMax Foundation: National Funding Program
The CarMax Foundation promotes automobile passenger safety awareness and seeks to improve the communities where company employees live and work. The Foundation's National Funding Program assists nonprofit organizations that are either national in scope or have a presence in one or more of the company's market areas. Funded organizations should either address auto safety for families and children or work to build a competitive workforce through automotive technical training. The Foundation also provides support for education and youth programs in the Richmond, VA region. The next application deadline for both programs is November 15, 2008. Grants Enhance Community Football Fields

NFL Youth Football Fund Grassroots Program
The NFL Youth Football Fund Grassroots Program, funded by the National Football League and administered by the Local Initiatives Support Corporation, provides support for neighborhood-based organizations and schools to create or rehabilitate playing fields in underserved neighborhoods. Field Surface Grants of up to $200,000 are available to help finance the resurfacing of community, middle school, or high school football fields. General Field Support grants of up to $50,000 are available for capital projects not associated with the actual field surface, such as the installation/refurbishment of bleachers, concession stands, lights, etc. All organizations applying for funds must be located within NFL Target Markets, and serve low- to moderate-income areas within those markets. Seed Money for Social Change Activists

Echoing Green Fellowships
Echoing Green sparks social change by identifying, funding, and supporting some of the world's most extraordinary emerging social entrepreneurs and the organizations they launch. Each year, Echoing Green awards 20 two-year fellowships to help social entrepreneurs launch new organizations that deliver bold, high-impact solutions. Fellows receive up to $90,000 in seed funding and technical support to turn their innovative ideas into sustainable organizations. Individuals at least 18 years of age, or partnerships (organizations led by two people), are eligible to apply. The application deadline is December 1, 2008. Support for Environmental, Peace, and Democracy Issues

Town Creek Foundation
The Town Creek Foundation is dedicated to a sustainable environment, a strong democracy, and a peaceful world. The Foundation supports national nonprofit organizations that strengthen the environmental movement, and those that are working to reduce the pressure on forests from the paper products industry. The Foundation also encourages advocacy work devoted to protecting the public's interest in the national media system. In addition, the Foundation provides grants to organizations working within the United States to reduce the risks and costs of war. Along with national grants, the Foundation provides support to Maryland organizations that promote the protection of the Chesapeake Bay. The upcoming deadline for letters of inquiry is November 21, 2008. Details on each of the Foundation's grant programs are available on the website listed above.

 

Grants Promote Cultural Conservation Worldwide

Genographic Legacy Fund
The Genographic Legacy Fund, administered by the National Geographic Foundation, supports indigenous or traditional communities worldwide. The Fund provides grants of up to US$25,000 for the preservation and revitalization of tangible or intangible indigenous or traditional culture. Examples of funded projects include documenting a traditional language or oral history, traditional language training or curriculum development, and preserving significant sites and artifacts. Projects must show strong local community involvement in their planning, governance, and implementation and must deliver positive, tangible, and sustainable benefits. This program is seeking applications proposing to research, develop, and design solutions to real world challenges involving the overall sustainability of human society.

Department of the Interior: Joint Fire Science Program
This program provides funding for scientific studies to address problems associated with managing wild land fuels, fires, and fire-impacted ecosystems.

Environmental Protection Agency: Climate Change and Allergic Airway Disease
This program is seeking applications proposing research on the impact of global change on the development and severity of allergic airway disease from exposure to pollen, mold, and other plant-derived allergens.
