OJJDP Bulletin Provides Juvenile Arrest Data for 2006 The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) has published Juvenile Arrests 2006. The 12-page bulletin draws on data from the FBI's "Crime in the United States 2006 to analyze trends in juvenile arrests. New SAMHSA White Paper Examines the Relationship between Suicide and Substance Abuse The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has released a new white paper focusing on the current state of knowledge about the interrelationship between substance abuse and suicide. Entitled "Substance Abuse and Suicide Prevention: Evidence & Implications," the document stresses substance abuse as a risk-factor for suicide and suicide attempts and the importance of continued learning about this connection to help prevent suicidal behavior. SAMHSA OAS report: Trends in Substance Use, Dependence or Abuse, and Treatment among Adolescents: 2002 to 2007 SAMHSA's Office of Applied Studies (OAS) has released The NSDUH Report: Trends in Substance Use, Dependence or Abuse, and Treatment among Adolescents: 2002 to 2007, a 3-page short report based on SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use & Health (NSDUH) that provides data on the yearly prevalence of cigarettes, alcohol, illicit drugs, marijuana, nonmedical use of prescription-type drugs, and inhalant in the past month by youth as well as the percentage who met the criteria for alcohol or illicit drug dependence or abuse. ----- 4. CDCMMWR QuickStats on Percentage of Adult Binge Drinking Available Overall, 20.4% of adults aged >18 years had five or more alcoholic drinks in 1 day at least once in the preceding year. For both men and women, the percentage decreased with age. In all four age groups, men were substantially more likely than women to have had five or more drinks in 1 day at least once in the preceding year. Final Federal Workplace Drug Testing Guidelines Allow Broader Use of Urine Specimen Testing The final revisions to the Guidelines announced today in the Federal Register are based on proposed 2004 tevisions which emphasized the important role testing of urine specimens plays in the deterrence of substance abuse in the Federal workplace. The final revisions incorporate tests for a broader range of illicit substances, and establish new procedures for ensuring the reliability and accuracy of urine drug testing. ----- 7. Parents Underestimate Teens Access to Prescription Drugs Parents of teenagers overestimate how easy it is for teens to buy cigarettes, according to a recent national telephone survey. Thirty-nine percent of parents said that cigarettes are the easiest forteens to buy, compared to one-fourth of teens. In contrast, parents underestimate how easy it is for teens to buy beer and prescription drugs.
