Clallam County Prevention Works! Community
Coalition Attending today’s meeting were Ida Carroll, Florence
Bucierka, Norma Turner, Jim Borte, Sara McPhee, Julie Kanaar, Jennifer
Charles, and Cynthia Martin. Florence Bucierka will be talking with Bob McArdle, head
of Safe and Drug Free School Programs of the Office of the State
Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) tomorrow morning. He would be our
second speaker for the May Forum. Norma will still talk with Lynn Kessler
even though she may agree to come but be unable to come because of legislative
business. Jim has made contact with Joe Hawe. Florence will contact Steve
Tharinger. These people will be making introductions. Cynthia passed out calendars with the primary tasks
listed on the calendar. We can revise the calendar but it is at least a
starting place. We went over some of the coming next two weeks worth of
deadlines. Ida agreed to do the clock hours. Florence is supposed to get in
touch with Nancy Martin about STARS and childcare issues. Shaine Schramling got the letter to the service clubs out
last Friday. We will get copies of the letter to the committees writing to
the businesses and to the churches. (Shaine sent them out this afternoon.) Cynthia brought a list of 3000 businesses in Clallam
County. We all agreed that was too many to send to. Norma suggested we send
to Chamber’s of Commerce and then to the top employees in the county. She
will get a list to Cynthia of the top employers. Norma said she has the banner reserved for two weeks
before the Forum in PA. In PA they provide banners but not in Sequim. It is
$65 to put up banner in Sequim and $75 in PA. We think Forks only charges $15
to put on up. We have to make the banner for Sequim but we can borrow one
from PA. Ida will check into the Forks area to see what they can do. Ida is also still working with Al on getting donations
from people on the west end. Julie will talk with Al Harness about helping
with the letter to the churches. Jane Shefler withdrew $1000 to pay for some things.
Florence is moving ahead on obtaining the money through grants to DASA and any
place else. The purpose in having the panel is to present the
community data. Our intention is to give each person a risk or protective
factor that they will discuss. We also want to be mindful of geographic
representation and representation from youth. Sara talked about the need to
include a youth group. Florence brought up about youth in treatment as one
way to address that issue. Kia Donahue from Jamestown S’Klallam would be a
possibility. Kia works as a student intern from high school and works at
Jamestown S’Klallam tribe. She has been active with the tobacco use
prevention. Florence could speak with her. Gary Cohn from the PA School District could speak to the
issue of the low commitment to schools using the Clallam County aggravate
numbers rather than specifics for each district. His job would be to let the
audience know about the school survey and also the special project that will
be going on in PA. Jane could contact him and get him to reserve that date. Faith Community but not including Lutheran ministers who
will be out of town. Need to discuss more what protective factor. Connie
Hyatt may be a help and also the name from Chris Borchers that Jane will get. Children and Family Services is #1 risk factor we need to
cover. We discussed if it should be from the agency perspective or
prevention. We all agreed prevention was the key and the way we would go. At this point, Florence and Norma brought up that we
should approach this from the risk or protective factor we want addressed and
see who would be best to handle that one rather than to look at people and
groups and assign them one. Even the program should be put forth in this
way. Florence will do a list of the risk and protective factors and make
suggestions of who should handle them. She will email this list to us this
week and we will meet after the Monday annual Prevention Works! Meeting to set
up the panel. We then discussed finances. Last time the Forum was for
all day, it was $25 for paying people. Whether it should be more or less was
discussed. We gave away over 25 scholarships several years ago and definitely
want that to be a part of this one. We finally decided on $20 as a way to
handle things. Registration Deadline will be May 1 but after that date, $25.
People paying at the door cannot be guaranteed lunch. Maybe it should be more
if they have childcare involved. We still hope to have churches donate space and staff
time to help with children. This was an expensive piece last year. There
will be a box on the form for those wanting childcare. Cynthia will call
Bobbie Chapman about helping with childcare helping with Nancy. Everyone needs to look closely at the calendar to see
what things need to be changed. People should get ideas for the information
sheet or for the promotional pieces to Norma. The next meeting will be Monday, March 10, after the
annual meeting.
Prevention Works Forum 2003 Those attending were Jim Borte, Jennifer Charles,
Florence Bucierka, Sarah McPhee, Jane Shefler, and Cynthia Martin. Speaker Cynthia brought the biography of the first speaker, John
Medina from Talaris Research Institute. Now that we have a speaker, we can go
ahead and try to find some funding for the event. The other speaker, Bob
McCardell, we are not totally set up for. But he at least expressed an
interest. We need to probably fly him up from Vancouver. Displays We also have the student lounge to use for and displays.
We can put displays along the sides rather than in the foyer. Sarah McPhee
will take charge of that. Cynthia thought she had the material we sent out
before on how to get signed up for a booth; she will get those to Sara.
Florence suggested she contact the Washington State Clearing House (Liz) for
material. Setup There is a play the night before; therefore we need to
get started early the next morning. Last time we checked in 500 people in one
half hour. We need 3 tables for registration (Shaine and Jennifer), one for
money (Jane), one for Stars credit (Nancy Martin), and one for clock hours
(Ida). Florence will check with Nancy and these minutes will alert Ida. Service Clubs and Businesses The letter to the service clubs was discussed. Shaine
and Jennifer will get it out as a mail merge. Cynthia had the letter. We
have over 150 without Forks. Need the letter on letterhead and to do merge.
We also discussed a letter to send to businesses (3000). Sara and Cynthia
will work on that letter and then ask Shaine and Jennifer for help on it.
This will be sent out closer to the meeting like about April 15. Publicity Jim presented a publicity plan for the event. He and
Norma had met and he brought in information he distributed. I will put some
of that onto a calendar to look at what we have to do before the Forum. He
suggested we use the fact that April is Child Abuse Prevention Month as a way
to publicize the event. We need to develop some messages to bullet the
event. Panel Need children and family services people on
the panel. This will be our primary topic at our next meeting. Next meeting will be at 8:00 a.m. on March 4 at OMC with
telelinking to west end.
Prevention Works! Forum Those attending today’s meeting included Jane
Shefler, Norma Turner, Shaine Schramling, Florence Bucierka, and Cynthia
Martin. Food Jane Shefler called Gale at Creative Delights is
available May 17, 2003. The cost is $12.50 per person which includes
continental breakfast, box lunch, and coffee. The box lunch alone $7.50,
coffee $3.50. We agreed to go ahead with them. Jane will call and confirm
with them. We will have something on registration form for food choice and
then will have it on the name tag. Time Line Pre-Advertising: End of February, early March Speaker We agreed that Michael Arthur as potential speaker was
informative but not as dynamic for a lay group as what we need. We need
inspirational speaker--someone who would inspire people to do things. Norma
mentioned Nancy Amidi – former national syndicated columnist. Graduate School
of Social Work – at UW. Spoke at a conference Norma went to 10 years ago and
importance of influencing policy and also has numbers. Florence brought up
early brain development in with it – Bruce Perry as Keynote. We all thought
he would be great but very expensive. Shaine suggested Andrew Meltzoff from
UW and Talaris. Cynthia heard him speak. Not only research oriented but is
excited about what he’s doing. Cynthia will call Andrew. Florence will contact Bob. Norma will invite Mary
Selecky to do introduction of the keynote speaker. We will have Joe Hawe
introduce Bob in the afternoon. With these speakers we would cover the early
years plus have comprehensive information. Norma suggested we have the
presentation cover first the research and then in the second port, what does
that mean. We all agreed we needed to have plenty of time for questions and
answers Norma: first presentation Research Data Then: What does that Mean Ample Question & Answer Schedule Welcome 9:00 Welcome…Commissioner Steve Tharinger 9:07 Mary Selecky to Introduce Speaker 9:15 Andrew Meltzoff on Research 10:30 Break 10:45 Andrew Meltzoff on What Does It Mean

Prevention Works! Forum The meeting consisted of
Florence Bucierka, Norma Turner, Susan Kirsch, Ida Carroll, Mary Jacoby and
Cynthia Martin. Cynthia went over what
had been discussed by the chairpeople at two previous meetings. The date for
the Forum will be May 17th, an absolutely perfect date because it
is the only time the High School Auditorium is available. Florence discussed
the issues and the reason for consider David Hawkins for the primary speaker.
We discussed the tentative schedule and made some changes. Norma suggested we
contact Mitzi Chandler to will give a very personal approach to ways community

Raising We all need
to be thinking of potential sponsors (minimum $100) for this event. We know
the hospital will be one. Florence will e-mail us a list of past sponsors so
we know who to begin with. Name
for the Conference In addition
to calling this Preventions Works! Forum, we want another name. The group
decided to put it out for a vote over email. Cynthia will do that with the
names we have so far but also asking if they have other suggestions. Maybe we
can have a prize for the best name and also develop some ownership. Names
suggested so far:
Prevention Works! Forum: Creating a Better Future
Publicity Florence will
bring in the costs at the next meeting for what advertisements we have done
before. Norma talked about what had occurred at the original PW Forum. Other to Involve The next
meeting notice for the December 9th meeting (after it is verified
at OMC for telelinking) will go out to just some people. The people who have
come to previous meetings which includes, Jim Borte, Jo LeDuke, Angie Graff,
Jane Shefler, Gwen Cole, and Debra Sharp plus those in attendance today.
Other names suggested include Jean Fairchild, Larry King (Mary will contact),
Tom Anderson (Cynthia will contact), Sharon Penn (Susan will contact), Chris
Borchers (Cynthia will contact), Bobbie Chapman, Cecile Greenway, Sue Renes
and Rita Markistan. We might want to include someone from Jefferson County. Next Meeting December

certainly not calling it Changing Community Norms. We felt the schedule should be approximately like this: 8:30-9:00

Services, Debra Sharp, Clallam County Dept. Health & Human Services, ( Discussion
centered around establishing focus, objectives and audience for next major
prevention forum. The group
discussed: What do we want to
do? 1.
Refocus on prevention and empowering the individual 2.
Educate on “what’s in vogue” (tools, program, language) 3.
Community norming – getting community engaged 4.
“What is out there” in prevention currently in our community 5.
Community awareness of Prevention Works!
Who is the
audience? 1.
Grassroots folks – all communities, faith, neighborhoods 2.
Target leaders (faith, business, government, etc.) 3.
Professionals currently working in the field of prevention
What do we want
the audience to take away? 1.
Rejuvenated and excited about what’s going on/what we are
doing (written) – celebration (printed material) 2.
Sense of shared responsibility (verbal) 3.
Sense of wanting to be part of the “action” – to do
whatever they can do within their sphere of influence (written) – volunteer
opportunities – policies in other communities (printed material) –
including concrete strategies on how to be involved 4.
Concrete information – research based information (verbal) –
Risk/protective factor model –
Community norming/environmental approaches –
Selective research models/strategies that people could volunteer for

2003 Prevention Works Forum
July 16, 2002
Health and Human Services Conference Room
Big Event Meeting was held with Cynthia
Martin, Debra Sharp, Florence Bucierka, Jennifer Charles, Fiona Hert, Mike
Doherty, Jane Shefler, Jan Laine and Jim Borte, Norma Turner and from West End
by Telelink Mary Jacoby and Ida Carroll attending.
Major discussion points included:
Should Big Event be done in coordination with
OPAEYC 's Saturday Event? Discussion included pros and cons. One suggestion
had been to have a Little Event and a Big Event. One solution to prevent
overload of events was to piggyback the Parents Education workshop to do the
Parent education as a "Little Event"-a Friday evening workshop for parents.
General consensus was that we would have an all-day Saturday event.
Search is on for major speaker(s) and a
unifying theme. Terry Tafoya Ph.D., has been discussed and would be a very
dynamic choice. He could give a Native American focus or a broader based
prevention topic. Florence will explore availability and topic possibilities
further. Website for more information is
http://www.tamanawit.com/. The cost would be about $4,500 for an all day
event (including travel and lodging). An additional speaker would be needed.
Discussion included considering Mike Gueria, Raymond Reyes. Should we find
another equivalent speaker at a similar cost?
Saturday forum will need unifying theme;
target audience should be broad based and include the community-at-large,
parents & grandparents, and providers. We should also consider two major
speakers and develop a unifying theme. Funding needs will be high, but
resources can be located once theme and speakers are set. We are open to
ideas for speakers and for theme. Let anyone on the committee know of your
suggestions or join us for the coming meeting in August.
Little Event (Friday Evening) event -Parent
Education could be an alternative to the Parent Education Summit. This might
be more targeted to parents and work better with the OPAEYC Conference. This
possibility will be discussed with Joannie Matter from OPAEYC. They will also
be encouraged to participate in the 2003 Forum of Prevention Works!
Date for event will depend on speaker
availability. Mid Spring would be best, but March 1 is OPAEYC's event and
Spring Break is end of March. Suggestions included early to mid April (note
Easter is April 20). Jennifer and Debra will check any available community
and chamber calendars to see if significant conflicts exist at this time. Let
Debra Sharp
dsharp@co.clallam.wa.us or Florence Bucierka
fbucierka@co.clallam.wa.us know if anyone knows of major event conflicts.
Next meeting date will be Monday August 5 at
8:30 a.m.at Linkletter Auditorium at Olympic Medical Center with telelinking
to Forks Hospital. Mary will check into the telelinking with the hospital.
Debra has verified it from the Port Angeles end.
