KEYS
(Kids Elementary Years for Success)

KEYS is a group of community members who focus on prevention efforts for children 5-10 years of age.

Minutes of the KEYS Meeting October 16, 2001

Patty Hannah, Judith Morris, Elna Kawal, Karen Junell, Bonnie Moses, Roger Moses, Kathleen Dione, and Cynthia Martin were present.

Help from Others

Elna discussed need to bring in new people to help on the committee.  She also asked for help on co-chairing because of her commitments to helping pass the levy in the Sequim School District.  Kathleen indicated a willingness and she was immediately selected to act as co-president.

Cynthia read a letter she had written to send to all principals in the county asking about literacy efforts.  Bonnie made a contact with someone from the Sons of Norway last year and she will follow up on with Elsa Johnson from that group.  She also spoke with Carol Hanson (417-6382) from the college.  Dugan Brown at the college works a lot with the Native Americans and is a good outreach person to make a contact with.  Kathleen just spoke with librarian in the Joyce district to see if they would like to participate.  We will add her name to our list.  Betsy Smith was very interested but is having problem with getting to meetings because she has young children.  Northwest Services and Laura Bach might include Americorp Volunteers on this committee.  We will also send letters inviting members of reading teams or reading specialists.  We will all work on encourage people to come to the meetings and try to get others to come to the next meeting.  Trying to tap into the senior citizens is another possibility.  George Stratton was brought up by Judith.  He is the head of the library system.  Branches of the Friends of the Library throughout the county should also be contacted.

 Literacy Calendar for Clallam County

The primary topic for today was to discuss the Calendar of Literacy Activities in Clallam County.  Elna brought a calendar to put on dates for literacy activities.  Judith Morris brought in a calendar with certain events included as far as she could fill in for us to add more.

We discussed  number of districts in county and the private and religious schools.  Partners in Parenting we think is the name of the group in PA dealing with homeschoolers. Olympic Peninsula Academy is the homeschooling group in Sequim.

Elna brought in article about the 4th graders receiving dictionaries from Rotary.  They make labels to personalize each dictionary.  This is an activity we might be able to capitolize on with other Rotary Clubs.  Patty said there were none in PA.

Ways to publicize literacy currently being done were discussed.

·        The Sequim Gazette insert on literacy was discussed.

·        The article on Reach out and Read that was in the Peninsula Daily News.

·        An article on parents reading to their child 20 minutes a day was discussed that existed in North Thurston, Tumwater, elm, Shelton, Rochester, Rainier and Griffin had a program.  This idea was strongly supported by Karen who is a reading specialist in the Sequim District.  This may be a bit difficult to get but they are attempting to get the word out of this importance of reading with your child.  The school district is working on this and even gives out books to help parents read with their child at an appropriate level and expect an appropriate amount of time reading.

·        Kathleen talked about the need to have a media blitz on reading to children.

·        With a 25% literacy rate it is important to have both help for children and for parents.  One school went from 9 to 60% with children who could read at grade level by the  end of 3rd grade.

·        Contact woman from the Education School District for ideas.  Karen spoke about a really dedicated and knowledgeable woman from the Educational School District (ESD).  She will contact Libby Correll to encourage her to tell us about her ideas on literacy efforts.

·        Judith talked about the program called “Bainbridge Reads.”  They try to have the whole community conversant in literary theme and practice.  To get the whole community reading means adults as well as children.  It grew much bigger than they had anticipated.  Parents are getting message more and more.

·        We need to get the media behind it.  Consider more of a blitz as our goal.  Cynthia suggested we do a series of different kinds of messages to get out in the media as part of our literacy efforts.  Change the emphasis monthly.
o         Families reading together.
o         Read books that are coming to the theater near you.
o         Nighttime reading.
o         20 minutes a day
o         Need a present; buy a book
o         Buy a book for your grandchild.
o         What are you reading?  Show your child.
o         Encourage groups to put books in baskets for holidays.
o         Buy a book for every child in the community.
o         Look for places to display inexpensive books such as Christmas House.
o         Put out lists for people to select books from for gifts

Find one area to emphasize in December.  John Brewer has an interest in literacy.   Think we can get backing from both papers but not with same stories

The meeting was adjourned at 5:20.  We will contact Irene to let her know what is happening and for her and Shele to know that the next meeting will be Wednesday, November 14 at 4:00 p.m. with telelinking if they want it.
