KEYS is a group of community members who focus on prevention efforts for children 5-10 years of age. Minutes of the KEYS Meeting Thursday, October 3, 2002Olympic Medical Center and ForksThe meeting was called to order. Those attending were Kathleen Dionne, Judith Morris, Elna Kawal, Irene Smith, and Cynthia Martin. Meeting of the Literacy Committee of United Way was discussed. That committee felt there was insufficient time to advertise and emphasize Family Literacy Day. Therefore, they decided to approach book stores about coupons that could be redeemed for $.25 or more for people to give out at holiday presents and then the child could get whatever book the child wanted to buy with these coupons. People could buy these for Christmas stockings or presents for the holidays and they would be an an affordable way to encourage reading. Judith said that the PA Education Foundation is trying to get Family Literacy Day to emphasize getting people to the library by bringing library cards into the schools. Perhaps a field trip to the public library would be planned on later. The head person from the library, George Stratton, was interested. Transportation to the library was an issue. This library emphasis was one way to improve the awareness of family literacy day. Perhaps even Friends of Library could help with this effort Elsa has talked with Marian Unger from the Port Angeles School District who is putting together a calendar of all the activities in the PA area. Elsa went to Sons of Norway Convention in August. Their focus is to adopt a school. The lodge here is going to adopt a school here but is considering other ways to do this. Elsa’s suggestion would be to do KEYS activities. She felt there was good coverage now for in the schools. Cynthia talked about her group coming to First Teacher and reading with the children there either in the morning or the afternoon. Elsa will get in touch with Cynthia about this. Elsa asked Cynthia to send a thank you note to Darlene Grandland on 7th street in PA. Darlene is a retired school teacher who donated some used books for giving to children.. Irene talked about the need to have volunteers come to the school. If they are tutoring they need to go through the finger printing and the background check. Could advertise that a.m. 10-12 and p.m. 2-4. The literacy calendar is up and on the website with everything we have up until now. We can add to it at any time. There is still an issue about printing it off the website but Shaine is working on that. Actually we have quite a few things on already. We are unsure right now how to get the most on the calendar since some items are taking a fair amount of room. It was suggested we put on a page of organizations with name and contact numbers and what they are doing for literacy such as the Sequim Noon Rotary Club which gives away dictionaries each year to 4th graders. We could make this also available on the web. Elsa is meeting with the college on the 9th and would like some things to get on power point presentation at the college. She also wanted to know about the power point presentation Cynthia has that she could use at the college to encourage literacy efforts. WA-Pen was discussed. This is an electronic discussion forum known as a list serv. It allows you to 1) learn about upcoming trainings, 2) announce and get support for events, 3) share resources with others across the state, and 4) ask for help and information from your peers. All it takes to enroll is to wa-pen-join@lyris.cahe.wsu.edu and leave the message area blank. You can call Drew Betz at 360 676-6736 if you have any questions. Cynthia and Shaine have developed some cards for members of KEYS to use to hand out when they go out to other groups. Kathleen has some now but Elna and Elsa would like some. It was suggested that we begin to work on next years literacy day now rather than wait until September of next year. The next meeting will be the first Thursday in November. Respectfully submitted, Cynthia Martin
