KEYS |
|
KEYS is a group of community members who focus on prevention efforts for
children 5-10 years of age. Kathleen Dione was in charge of the meeting today since Elna is off enjoying the weather in Hawaii. Those attending were Judith Morris, Elsa Johnson, Karen Junell, Bonnie Moses, Kathleen Dione, Larry Welsh, Jody Jacobsen, and Cynthia Martin. Elsa was new to the group. She is from the Sons of Norway (rejhnsn@attglobal.net). Their group is willing to help with our goals. Response
from Principals
Cynthia discussed the lack of response from principals in Clallam County asking for help on establishing a literacy calendar. It was suggested we might want to contact librarians instead or possibly reading specialists. Kathleen will contact librarians such as Tracey Fitzwater in Crescent and the librarians in Clallam Bay and in Forks. Other names suggested were Mary Ann Ungar who is involved in Title 1 in Port Angeles, Darlene Jones who is sometimes at the PA district office, and Irene Smith and Shele Kinkead. We will also send the letter to Girls and Boys Club, Kiwanis, Reach Out and Read, to see if we can gather additional dates of activities in the county. Judith will speak with George Stratton from the library. The county is also working on Adult Litercy (Dr. Jann Gardiner at Peninsula College). Judith agreed to add the dates that Karen Junell had put in with the ones she already has on her Literacy Calendar. Volunteer Readers Several suggestions were made for using volunteer readers. The Sons of Norway have agreed to help, perhaps the Retired Teachers in Clallam County, and senior citizens. We discussed ways we might be able to use some of these people at the Festival of trees. It was agreed that might be too ambitious for this year. Activities for this Year We discussed encouraging groups to include books in gift baskets. Elsa will contact the Salvation Army. Karen will contact the Elks and Town Partners in Sequim. Jody will check with the Sheriff’s about their Salvation Army party. Cynthia will contact Mary Elizabeth Barr from the Sequim Library. Judith will contact the Chamber of Commerce for a list of nonprofits in Clallam County. Karen will check to see if she has access to that list from another source. Since we have no money, the idea was to encourage these groups to consider giving the last present of a book. First Project: We agreed that perhaps the best way to go this year would be first with a flyer encouraging groups to include books as gifts for the holidays. Judith will work on the flyer. We might highlight where there are public readings and even make suggestions of places to buy inexpensive books either at local book stores or they can contact Cynthia about Scholastic Books which are about $1.00 each if you buy the less expensive ones. Judith will check with the local book stores about inexpensive books they can have available. Other Projects: Judith brought up the success of a program to put Buckets of Books on Buses. It is being done in Port Angeles by some school buses. We discussed checking into public buses or at a minimum trying to get it to other school buses. This would be a good source to use our used books. Karen discussed having a big Book Exchange. Cynthia brought up having a book for admission to activities. Use of Volunteer Readers: Jody discussed being a reader at Juvenile Court on Dependency Days (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursdays). Since we really feel we need to find worthwhile activities for our potential volunteer readers, she will discuss this with Elsa. Judith brought up the help on being readers that was given by Mary Morgan from PA School District and Kathy Schubkin from the Reach Out and Read Program. We might be able to get them to put this training on again. Next Meeting We will try to change our meeting time back to Thursdays so that Irene and Shele can participate. We are looking at December 6 but as of now we cannot have telelinking with PA School District on that day. We will check with Shele and Irene and figure out another time or another place and let everyone know. |
