KEYS is a group of community members who focus on prevention efforts for children 5-10 years of age. Minutes
of the KEYS Meeting Olympic Medical Center and West End Outreach Mission Statement: To improve the quality of life
for elementary age children. The meeting was called to order by Elna Kawal. Those attending were Elna, Bonnie Moses, Karen Junell, Kathleen Dionne, and Cynthia Martin. We missed hearing from the West End. We discussed the issue of our primary objective--literacy. We discussed who in the community knows what we are doing. Karen Junell talked about the response from the Sequim School District. Maybe we need to have a person appointed as a liason to Prevention Works! Cynthia talked about the need to have the schools more involved in community activities. Karen talked about the need for schools to work with their clients…parents. The need in today’s society to be collaborative was discussed. George Lindamood may be a possibility to be a part of Prevention Works! We talked about the library involvement. Karen suggested we go to the internet to see who at the state level is working with elementary literacy. Karen explained how the Sequim reading programs operates. Kathleen asked why reading scores are down. The need for kindergarteners to learn how to get order to their life was discussed. She felt more children came to school unprepared for the order and that is necessary to know what comes next. Strive to stay organized and priority need to be stressed for preschoolers. The falling off of scores for children from Head Start after a few years was discussed. Need to get the sleep that many are not getting right now. All of these things need to be emphasized. The time school started was discussed. The possibility of reading programs being offered after school are now more limited since in Sequim the district has set 3:30 p.m. as a dismissal time. Prevention Works is looking at the need to focus on a greater range of children beyond 0-4. Cynthia moved and Karen seconded that we urge Prevention Works! to change their focus to be broader from birth to high school age. It was passed. We will attend the next meeting of the United Way Committee but we won’t abandon the literacy concept at this time. We adjourned at 5:10 p.m. and then talked a lot later. Respectfully submitted, Cynthia Martin |
