KEYS |
|
KEYS is a group of community members who focus on prevention efforts for children 5-10 years of age. Minutes
of the KEYS Meeting Elna Kawal called the meeting to order.
Those attending were Elna, Bonnie and Roger
Moses, Kathleen Dione, Karen Junell, Larry Welsh, and Cynthia Martin.
We made an attempt to find Irene Smith but were technologically
challenged therefore, her
attendance counts. Recruiting new members was discussed. We have a few names from the Judith Ford evening. We also need to seek new people. We need to find someone who has some technology background. Each of us can look for others who might be willing to be involved. We discussed the goals of keys. Elna brought up the need to measure our success and suggested
we use the 3rd grade scores on the ITBS; one of the problems with
doing this is that different class years have different levels of readers.
Karen suggested we get the Washington State second grade reading test
and then compare with 3rd grade ITBS.
Karen will find out when it happens in Sequim.
Roger suggested we look at the college to see if any one requires
tutoring as a requirement for those classes.
Cynthia talked about getting high profile readers, perhaps 1000 hours
to kids. Perhaps a contact with each school and where we could help
with volunteers. Betsy Smith in
Sequim does the coordination of the volunteers and Karen does the training.
We could get ministers, politicians, Prevention Works! people, school
board, physicians, and teachers to join us.
Maybe we get letters to everyone and see how many volunteers to help. Our mission statement is to enhance and support existing organizations providing services to help elementary children in Clallam County learn to read for fun, information, and communication. Our goal is to support the efforts of schools and parents throughout Clallam County in increasing the reading comprehension of children. Our target group would be 5-8 year olds. Our measurement strategy is how we want to measure it each year and they will increase by a certain percentage toward the goal of 3 years 7 months or whatever month the test is given. Don’t want to compare one district with another. Our promotional strategy: How we will put our mission and goal into action.. Could use this for a kickoff for the summer. Karen discussed a reading program for the summer. Once a week over the summer, a struggling reader meets with a caring adult to talk about what they have read during the week. Do something with comprehension. Kathy Heggeness at Greywolf wants to get this started. We discussed each school setting up the project any way they want to. The message has to be the same message. Elna discussed the campaign to do a media blitz including getting notes in power bills, on buses, during the summer, and with community leaders reading. We may need to talk about the increase being a percentage not an absolute score. Schools are also interested in increasing their goals and are mandated to make some improvement. Don’t loose the reading level over the summer. Free breakfast from Park and Recreation or Community Action might be another source of children to whom groups could read. The possibility of using student volunteers was discussed. Slogans in the newspapers and through PUD were discussed. Serenity House, Girls and Boys Club, and Olympic National Park, and certainly newspapers were discussed as possible ways to expand the campaign. For next meeting, each of us needs to: 1. Get Cynthia a list of potential adult volunteers with addresses, phone numbers, and email if possible 2. Think how we can measure our goals and what our goals should be 3. If you have a contact, contact schools for ideas 4. Think of slogans such as the ones below: · Brush your teeth and read every day. · Turn off the television and read. · Reading calms your child before bedtime. · Reading brings closeness to your family. · Put reading in your child’s life every day. · Read any time, any place, every day. · Read to relax. · Read for fun. · Give your child the gift of reading. ·
Next time give a book. If you can do this right away, Cynthia will compile the
results for the next meeting. Elna
will check to getting this room for another meeting.
Next meeting will be 18th or 25th.
Elna will try for the 18th at 4:00 p.m. The meeting was adjourned. Respectfully submitted, Cynthia Martin
