KEYS is a group of community members who focus on prevention efforts for children 5-10 years of age. Minutes
of the KEYS Meeting The meeting was called to order by Elna Kawal. Those attending were Elna, Roger and Bonnie Moses, Kathleen Dionne, Debra Roos, Irene Smith, Elsa Johnson, and Cynthia Martin. Elna spoke about the Literacy Activities Calendar.
She felt we needed to really focus in on that one item.
The calendar, which would appear on the Prevention Works! website
would let everyone know of different organizations and schools literacy
activities. If it is a yearly
event let us know. The
following people agreed to check with some group: Cynthia suggested we contact private schools, home schools, Olympic Christian, Queen of Angels, and any other who might want to be included. Elna suggested we get this put together so that we might get some publicity. We would have one heading by area, contact person, phone number, e-mail, frequency of the event, numbers being served and description of the program. Information from organizations that donate would also be listed by areas. In this way we can see what everyone is doing to avoid duplication efforts. It would make it clear where people can go if they want to help. Irene will check with the Tribal School. Community Network passed out free books at the Kids Fest and they will give them out at the Clallam County Fair. There is a need to look beyond just doing this kind of activity in Port Angeles. This was the first year that group has done this. KEYS can apply. It is very focused on healthy and safe families. Reach out and Read also needs to be involved; they have just recently ordered books to distribute. Elna suggested we include names of groups providing funds for literacy efforts. Groups such as the Soroptimists, Elks, and any others. Elsa talked about the writing she has done on hints on reading and story telling. Patricia Polacco, a well known children’s author, will be coming to Franklin Elementary School on May 8. For Jefferson and Hamilton she will be at Vern Burton Auditorium. Thank you, Mr. Faulkner is a book about how she learned to read which wasn’t until 5th or 6th grade. The recent Newsweek (April 26) article is important about literacy. Back issues of Children’s Magazine might be available and Elsa will check this out. On June 1 there will be a meeting for professionals working with Latino families. Debra talked about the Reading Camp in PA and will check on this and let us know. Bonnie brought in an article that she felt were quite interesting. Kathleen will scan and send it out to all of us. The need to send collected information on the calendar to Cynthia as soon as possible was discussed. Elna talked about doing an article for the newspaper. Not sure when it might be published. Elsa suggested she send the same thing to the Peninsula Daily News. The first Thursday in August 29 of August will be our next meeting Elna will check the schedule for next year. October 3rd might be the next meeting after that. Elna will check with Irene. The meeting was adjourned at 5:15 after tuning out Irene about 4:45. Information Needed for Calendar: ·
