Board of Directors Minutes

Board Meeting of Prevention Works!
January 28, 2004, Olympic Medical Center

Those attending were Norma Turner, Pam Arnott, Florence Bucierka, Angie Graff, Jim Borte, Jane Shefler, Rachel Anderson, and Cynthia Martin

Steve Ironhill from the west end will be speaking at the next meeting.  He will talk about grants he has received and others in the planning stage.

Co-Sponsoring Speaker:

Karen Junell, Title 1 specialist in the Sequim School District has requested that Prevention Works! co-sponsor a presentation by Dr. Len Fellez on April 27 at 7:00 p.m. at the Sequim High School Cafeteria.  He is the author of two books on parenting and one on bullying in schools.  Cynthia suggested we give $200 for this evening because this is closely aligned with the goals of Prevention Works!  It was moved, seconded and passed that we co-sponsor this evening with the Sequim School District.

Medina Report:

Florence gave the report on the committee meeting yesterday about John Medina’s presentation in March.  The program will be at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church because of the ability to seat more people.  It will be publicized as Parenting with Love and Laughter, Tips for Successful Parenting.  We want to give a children’s book to every parent and have asked Ann Brewer if the Clallam County Literacy Committee would like to provide the $300 and become a co-sponsor of the evening.  There is even a room connected to the main room where parents with children could be without disturbing the rest of the audience.  There will be room for exhibits from local agencies to have displays.  Door prizes will be given out; this will be discussed at the next meeting which is February 9 at 3:00 at OMC before the Prevention Works! meeting.

Nominating Committee:

Angie Graff will contact the nominating committee about meeting.

Annual Meeting:

The issue of how we can more clearly get the message across to the community about what Prevention Works! does was brought up.  The lack of clarity in getting this message out to people is another issue.  We also need to do more to bring in people from the tribes and the Latino community as part of our group.  The group felt these issues should be examined at our annual meeting.  Taking on as a primary goal to look at how we reach out to the community once we have clarified what we do.  The need to have things for people to do, have information about possible grants, clearly articulate what we are doing, to speak in English so newcomers understand what is said, to bring in co-chairman to expand our involvement from others, etc. will be the subject of our next meeting.  Even looking at our goal as being the emotional Chamber of Commerce for Clallam County was discussed.  Pam said that even people who know what we are doing sometimes have difficulty understanding the meetings and she was one of those.  The need to have people speak clearly, talk as if no one understands them, and not use abbreviations that everyone might know was discussed.

The need to have a facilitator was brought up.  It was felt that the facilitator need to be strong, know about prevention, and have a good sense of humor.  It was moved and seconded that Florence get a facilitator for the annual meeting.  We wanted to have a chance to either meet with him/her before or at least in a conference telephone conversation.

Norma suggested we use Cynthia’s Power Point presentation as part of the meeting.  The fact that this is the same meeting week as John Medina created concerns and we decided to postpone the annual meeting until March 22.  Once the date is confirmed with a facilitator that Florence will locate, Jane Shefler will check into St. Andrews as a location.  The meeting will be in the late afternoon with dinner included.  Jennifer will be asked to take care of the food.

Tobacco Report

Rachel talked about needs for her state report.  They also want agency coalition members names and agency.  She had objected to this and it was felt just first names and last initials might be used.

Financial Status

$5500 in regular account, $2800 in CD which makes .75 interest.

Becoming a Baby Friendly Community

Pam brought up the possibility of being A Baby Friendly Community.  She will bring in additional information about how this is done.  Cynthia discussed our dropping the ball on the Family Friendly Businesses which had seemed like such a good idea.

Next Board Meeting…25 of February

Rachel will bring food for February 9th Prevention Works! meeting.

Respectfully submitted,

Cynthia Martin
