Clallam County Prevention Works!
Community Coalition Jane Shefler, Florence Bucierka, Norma Turner, Nancy Martin, Nita Quan, Susan Kirsch, Cynthia Martin, Shaine Schramling, Fiona Hert, Ida Carroll (Portions) Meeting was called to order Discussion of November 18 meeting. It was decided to not have a November meeting and to instead focus on inviting legislators and lining things up for December 9 meeting. Nancy Martin would like to have child care involved
on this meeting. All CC&R
agencies are being asked to meet with Legislators. Would save them having
to make separate appointments Potential Agenda 4:15 Followed
by brief description of Prevention Works! 4:20 Presentation Portion – 90 seconds for each speaker. Impact of prevention on each person. And have refreshments. Information from each agency on how they are impacted through work of Prevention Works! Purpose is to explain what PW is and how prevention is important. Information about Parent Ed, Home Visiting and Child Care. Nita asked why are we doing this – showcasing what we are doing or to keep things going in terms of future votes? Huge programs that are on the chopping blocks. Message is that Prevention is important and should not be cut. Norma suggested that one of the businesses that has received Family Friendly Award could also talk about it. We are explaining what we are doing, why it works and why it should continue to be funded. Florence suggested we really refine things on what the message. Nancy talked about having something they can take
home – what the big items are – Child Abuse & Neglect – so they
will look to spotlighted words. When
bills come up before them, these are the key words that we hope they will
look at. Nita suggested we
tell them that this is what we, the constituents believe in.
Norma suggested we have a broad spectrum of constituents (law
enforcement, business). Nancy also suggested to invite Juvenile Services.
Nita talked about our presentation to Secretary of Health –
doesn’t pull heartstrings like actual clients.
Nancy talked about the overall issues.
Norma talked about she is going to a meeting in Seattle with a
group to introduce a bill in order to stop prevention cuts. Network, CMASA
funds all on chopping block. John Beitzel, Commissioner, Law Enforcement, Juvenile Services, Steve Methner, Mental Health, Child Care R&R all were suggested as participants for the meeting. Florence talked about quick snippets of impact – could do something similar with Prevention. Buck, Thomas, Hargrove, Kessler - Invited Florence and Cynthia will work on it with Jim Borte in terms of contacting legislators. West End – Mayor Nedra Reed & Police Chief Mike Powell Tom Anderson, PASD Nita is going to Washington DC for Rural Health Grant and would like information -Drug Free Communities Grantee for 3 years One suggestion - Here’s what we want you to remember – On a Card with Contact #’s on back. List priorities on Web Site. x First Steps x Child Care for kids with special needs x CMASA x DASA Florence & Jim will contact legislators. Jane is doing refreshments. 2 or 3 people talk about Prevention Works! Focusing on things about Prevention Works that are unique. Cynthia talked about critical need of having representation throughout the county. Home Visiting: Summit February 14 Norma – has been going to group headed by Ruth Kagi representing children’s issues and children. Developing 1 page flyer for legislators on prevention. 1 page from our group for legislators. She is going tom morning. Tomorrow is last day to have your name on it. This group has been meeting since May. Children’s Home Society (Lori Lippel), WCPCAN, PTA, Child Care, Children’s Alliance, Family Policy Council. January meeting – Carolyn Foundation – update with different programs. Deborah Feldman. Big Event meets Friday, November 1 Bio on Dr. Erickson handed out in regards to HV summit. Meeting adjourned.
