Norma – Port Gamble – several emails, personal visit . . . Tom Locke even tried contact. . . Norma is leaving in 2 weeks – Dec. 11-March 20. So maybe we should look toward doing it next year.

CADCA Conference 1/20-1/23 Washington D.C. – if anyone is interested in attending, please talk with Florence.

Norma T. talked about volunteer board – Courthouse has volunteer board and asked if PW would like December. Handouts, display material for PW needs to go up – Kathy Smith volunteer coordinator. Have until December 2 we believe.

Clallam County Community Network Update – wanted to slow down and have more equitable process.  They would like us to talk about PW at next meeting

1/15/04 5:30 p.m.-8 p.m. at Juvenile Services – would like 1 or 2 people – have someone come talk about PW (Cynthia and Angie).  Cynthia and Angie will check with Pete Peterson about time schedule. After that then, 2/2/04 Boards get together for an hour and answer questions back and forth.

2 min – Network background – Phil Tallmadge in Legislature . . . Bill not well written – get concept out and then come back and clean up the legislation. By the next year, he had stepped down. 23 Member Board – Fiduciary Members (DSHS, Employment Security, County Commissioners, City Council, School Board, Non-profit . . .) Huge, overwhelming burden to get members appointed. Look at communities to put together plan. CC was first in state – short term and 10 year goals. Abuse Prevention 0-5. Get funding every year . . . 39 Networks (was 53) – Community decides own network. Tribes can have their own as well. Jamestown has one. Some are 2 counties together. Focus on what they are doing and state gives their money. Narrow administrative thing – grants for home visiting, early childhood stuff. Other communities have spent 100% on admin and nothing on programs. Sticky part of legislation – decategorization: netwoks are supposed to look at how system works and make recommendations for change. Jim Hargrove – keeps going to the wall for Network. Pete at JS – RPD – couldn’t get members to serve on advisory committee – now the network serves as RPD. Did pilot project – looked at Juvenile Dept. and assessed what was going on and ways to make more efficient. In contrast, Tacoma network – has full time person and is looking at Juvenile Svcs – 2 year process.  Jane has asked about funding – RFP Process. Cooperation with Rural Health Grant. When Network first started – did some of the first collaboration in Clallam County. Non-profits and agencies came up with process for RFP’s.

Maybe have 1:1 with Pete (Angie & Cynthia)

Home Visiting

Summit – Pam . . .  50+ people attended 11/14/03 – good range of people attending – great event. Discussion of speaker as “sales person” for her beliefs/thoughts/education.

Tobacco (Rachel Anderson)

Trained Pam and Nita’s staff to do brief tobacco intervention on Home Visiting Staff. Very interactive training . . . to involve people in what is happening. Great American Smokeout with ads in Paper. Nurse in H.D. – had an adopt-a-smoker program. Cardiac Rehab has decided to take on tobacco cessation. Classes across the nation are not working. Local contractors are really trying to get State DOH Tobacco – work with DASA for tobacco cessation – hope for collaboration. No place for docs to refer patients – adopt-a-smoker may be more effective. Take care of them for the day – works for AA with mentoring. Nicotine Anonymous (Gene Meyer). How to get low income women to come to tobacco cessation classes – stress management is such a huge issue. 1 – 4 week program out of Massachusetts. Pam so far ahead of other countries. England, France. Jane talked about someone on cruise.

Norma talked about Keynote speaker from Network Conference – from California – tracks severe childhood incident (abuse, violence witness) tracks that as impact on adult health behaviors (obesity, smoking, cancer, high blood pressure). Talks about guy with horrific background going from one addiction to the next and have many inter-connections. Massive interview when people come to see him – so when he walks in room, he has all information from interview. Many patients, no one has asked them these things – gets them started on whole different level. Social group was middle-income. 50% of people who walk in door has severe childhood episode.

(Norma) Guy in Hawaii – interactive video machine for adolescents with questions. Margaret Bangs – doing stuff with at-risk adolescents.

Discussion of adult children of alcoholics (Jane).

December meeting – need a committee for John Medina

No board meeting for December.

Meeting adjourned

Respectfully submitted,

Shaine Schramling
