Announcement - Cynthia Martin - Parenting Matters Foundation Fund Raiser – Saturday, April 17 and Silent Auction. Speaker is Steve Maybell, Youth Eastside Services – potential speaker for something Prevention Works. Author of Raising Respectful Kids in a Rude World.

Annual Meeting Information (Scott Waller Facilitator) – March 22 – Sunroom 4-6:30 p.m. with Food. Rachel will pay for food. (Jennifer will work on it). Angie will set up coffee tea.

Discussion for meeting - Florence: Perhaps talking about now that we have expanded Prevention Works 0-18 and how we bring it all together. How we become more integrated. How we use what we’ve already established and looking at Risk & Protective Factors, media, prevention plan – how to get it more cohesive. Discussion at last board meeting – who we are. Which parts are making sense of strategic plan – and get ready to update. Focus for next couple years.

1.  Officer Elections

2.  Power Point Presentation

3.  Brief history of vision, mission, how we set priorities – how to integrate all parts of PW.

4.  What we hope to accomplish the next couple years for Strategic Planning Committee

Getting key people – to come to the meeting – Connie Hyatt, Nancy Martin (Norma), Jody Jacobsen (Shaine), Fiona Hert (Shaine), Pete Peterson, Elna Kawal, Ann Brewer (Karen), Patty Hannah (Karen)

Endorsement Request – When United Together - Shaine had emailed out previously and passed around 1 copy today for discussion.

Gwen C. tried to synthesize the information for group – everyone who provides any sort of youth services – to do a directory for youth where they hang out, Safeway, Skate Shop – a lot of services if youth are plugged in. Trying to reach those who aren’t already plugged in. Karen thought it was only going to be online. Gives agencies who want to outreach to youth more knowledge about where they are and when do they hang out. Florence questioned the duplicity of directory. They are working on it through grant funding. Florence & Karen suggested that we do an endorsement for a specific application.  Karen talked about him coming to Rock N Roll and the discussion about what he's doing. Jim – suggested inviting him for the April PW Meeting so we could hear more about the project.  Policy – we endorse specific organizations on grants but we do not do a blanket endorsement. Jim will contact him.

Norma discussed policy that it was more about an event or grant.

Rachel A. – Tobacco Work Plan for State Fiscal Year 04-05

1. Youth Access

    A. conduct retailer education, targeting all licensed tobacco retailers in Clallam Co.
    B. policy education--collaborate with ESD, local schools, Juvenile Services to enforce tobacco infractions

2. Cessation

    A. Health Care Systems Change--collaborate with OMC & FCH to train Health Care Providers in the Brief Tobacco Intervention Skills Training.
    B. Explore dispensation of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT).

3. Secondhand Smoke

    A. Fourth Annual Clallam County Smoke Free Restaurant & Lodging Guide.
    B. Continue the "Blow Bubbles...Not Smoke" campaign.

4. Enhancement Grant

    A. Continuation of services in Port Angeles & Sequim (CCHHS MSS/WIC Program; Jamestown S'Klallam, Lower Elwha Klallam, First Step Family Support Center, OMC's New Family Services)
    B. Establish services on West End.

Freedom from Smoking Class – publicity has been problematic across the state

Cynthia discussed difficulty of health advisory committee for Head Start – felt like there needed to be more personal contact.

Rachel – with enhancement grant – freedom from smoking for you and your baby. Had food, daycare, times – while they are managing stress with smoking. Maybe to have open-ended stress management classes – incorporating smoking issues. 5-6 weeks worth of curriculum. Barb Meyer is helping.

Moved and seconded to approve Tobacco work plan as presented.

Election Committee – slate of officers – Norma Turner has agreed to run for president, Shaine for secretary, Rachel Anderson for treasurer

Cynthia Martin, Ida Carroll – remain on. Shaine sent email out with slated of officers for elections to PW Membership with invitation for others to submit their names.

Florence B

  • Drug Free Communities Reapplication
    • We’ve had for last 5 years – need to go through as new applicant. Meet with County Commissioners – Florence has met with them. Wants to just let us know about it. How funding has been used – part of Jennifer & Florence’s salary is paid out of that, training, supplies. Will have a little bit of time after the Annual meeting to get changes in – Due March 27.
  • Working Together: Making Washington Extraordinary Conference – trying to replicate Prevention Works – statewide conference – bring leadership in many areas together to really put focus on prevention. Discussion of key leaders in our area.

Jane – 501c3 status – still haven’t submitted the application. Jane has all the stuff to do that. Hopefully by June 1 we’ll have the application in. Need to run through accountant. Will need some help to look at the materials. Met with Charlie a few months ago – IRS wants less rather than more. A lot of the answers are not as complicated as our first response to them. Do not have to file income tax form since we’re less than $25,000 – gross revenues 2003 10,600

Florence - Discussed Grantwriting Workshop – April or May – day of the week preference. A few mentioned May as month.

Meeting Adjourned

Respectfully submitted,

Shaine Schramling, Secretary
