Board Meeting of Prevention Works! Call to order Those present - Jim Borte, Rachel Anderson, Shaine Schramling, Susan Hillgren, Fiona Hert, Cynthia Martin, Karen Meyer, Kathleen Dionne. Appreciation to outgoing board members (Jane, Angie) Mike Svec – When United Together – correspondence – Fiona, Karen, Shaine will correspond. Grant Writing Training (Rachel) – Looking at a place with a computer lab – Rachel has put Florence in touch with college. Some potential dates. Drug Free Communities Grant – has been submitted. The following resolution was made: RESOLVED: That Angela Graff and Jane Cantor Shefler shall be removed as signatories on the corporate Washington Mutual bank accounts. Norma Turner, President; Cynthia Martin, Vice-President; Shaine Schramling, Secretary; and Rachel Anderson, Treasurer, are authorized as signatories on the corporate bank accounts (checking and CD investment account) with Washington Mutual. Shaine Schramling and Cynthia Martin will not be co-signatories as from the same. Jim moved, Rachel seconded. (Norma via email) - How PW can play a more active role in establishing a Clallam County Prevention Plan -- it would be a great way to get new players including business, schools, medical, etc parts of our community to focus on prevention issues. · Debra Sharp had been originally hired to work on this but this really hasn’t been done. · When we received money from the Commissioners we had said we would do that. · Fiona asked about process of developing prevention plan. · Florence can likely get a list of Prevention Plan (later found out this is not the case and that there really aren't any that have been developed). How best to continue the discussion that we didn’t have enough time for on the annual meeting. Karen M. will lead discussion at next PW meeting to finish 1st priority. Next PW Meeting – Monday, April 12, 2004 Presentation: Preston Kayes – Juvenile and Adult Drug Court Business Portion Margaret Maxwell – North Olympic Regional Housing Network – would like 2 minutes to pass out new housing packet and offer our speakers' bureau. Karen Meyer – Will lead a more of a discussion on priority #1 family management. Need to look at the data in order to move forward - maybe for May 10, 2004 meeting. Florence has asked PA Police Chief Tom Riepe to do a short presentation (like 10 minutes) at the April meeting too but have not heard back from him. Presenting Healthy Youth Survey and Community Development Survey (Stacie Neff – May) Cynthia talked about inviting other School Districts to find out their survey information - Patra Boots (Sequim) Mary Ann LaFazia was suggested as a good person – she will be in town on April 23 and Karen will talk with her then. (Treatment meeting – Lake Crescent) Question about Steve Ironhill – grant – did they get it? Discussion about Membership and Board and Involvement · Shelly Turner (Pediatrician – becoming new mom) · Fiona talked about – bringing a colleague to the meeting. Can we take a document we’re reviewing – outside task. · Safekids problems Communities that Care 1. Would PW! be willing to write a letter of support
for our Year #1 Plan for Parent Education? Parenting Education – Michael Gurian – Boys and Girls Learn Differently, Wonder of Boys, Wonder of Girls, $7K – Spokane. Barbara Clampett, Fiona, Karen Meyer – have discussed Susie Weller – nurture vs. nature – looking for money from College Foundation, Foundation for Early Learning - $1500 to Parent Ed Summit. Tobacco – Ordinance draft – requests prohibiting smoking on county owned and leased properties. Recommended to go to board of health. Recommended to board of county commissioners. Work session with them. Park and Fair Boards – requested smoking not be prohibited county owned parks and trails and fair grounds. Fairgrounds concerned with loss of revenue. Spokane tried before with little success. Dept. Natural Resources – when it is too dry, burn ban puts it into effect. Going back to work session and then go to public hearing. 76% of all county residents do not smoke. Are above state average on those who do smoke 24% vs 20%. One of the issues that came up - Next Board Meeting – Wednesday, April 28 at 8:00 a.m. John Medina – Cynthia Martin, Jim Borte, Karen Meyer, Rachel Anderson, Jennifer Charles – Meeting at 3:00 p.m. on Monday 4/12/04 to discuss future plans. Effective July, Fiona will resign from the board and will be relocating to Michigan. We are sad to see her go, but wish her continued success.
