Board Meeting of Prevention Works! Those present: Rachel Anderson, Florence Bucierka, Jim Borte, Cynthia Martin, Norma Turner, Shaine Schramling, Fiona Hert, Susan Hillgren, Pam Arnott, Karen Meyer Meeting called to order 1. Adopt minutes of previous board meeting –It was moved and seconded to approve minutes of Board Meeting. 2. Treasurer report – No report 3. Rachel A. - Tobacco ordinance / public hearing June 22 @ 10:30 a.m - County Commissioners – Went before Board Monday. Officially determined that bus stops are on county property. Go to work session on Tuesday. She will miss next PW meeting but will keep us updated. Ordinance would prohibit smoking on county courthouse property and Juvenile Services – excludes Fairgrounds and Parks & Trails. Requested letter supporting ordinance. Cynthia moved, Fiona seconded and passed. Rock N Roll met with Tobacco Coalition – will be looking into getting cities on board – doing a tobacco infraction for Minor in Possession. There is an RCW – need to talk more with Sue Renes, Wally Sellye- at PAHS – has 83% success rate in his cessation program. Wanting to have some clout behind an MIP on school grounds. How to work effectively with police and schools to change the culture? Need for something to be punitive but also a learning opportunity. How to educate and work together – will be talking with Sequim, PA, & Forks Police Chiefs to reduce youth smoking. Florence mentioned support of Judge Bill Knebes. Importance of setting a community norm – that our youth don’t smoke. Importance of going to where the kids are. “NOT on Tobacco” – all the Prevention Interventionists are trained. Schools already are obligated to do some tobacco work (probably about 25 are trained in this curriculum). 4. Cynthia - Discussion of Foundation for Early Learning (FEL) childcare grant opportunity – From Garrison Kurtz – bottom line is that Norma talked with Nancy Martin who is willing and eager to chair the committee. Nancy, Barbara, Martha Standley, PHN (Janet), Child Care, Norma willing to also serve. Labels for Education program – work with Child Care providers – be able to get equipment they need but can’t afford. 5. Approval of appointments to FEL child care grant committee - Cynthia moved and seconded - Establish as an ad-hoc committee with Nancy Martin as chair. 6. Matrix as per discussion from previous general meeting – made some revisions. What is board hoping to get – Common vision – historical perspective and start of strategic plan. Goals going forward, What we have done, what has brought general public in, Historical perspective and start of strategic plan, historical review of success and critical path for future, need to have a plan to move ahead. Send out June 1 to go out to committees and ask Friday, July 16 on deadline. Board meeting scheduled for July 28 – for Board to review. Make personal phone calls to invite people to attend the meeting. Executive Committee will do the global evaluation for PW. Include Family Friendly Business (to Nancy Martin). Norma discussed changing Membership Chair and will have coffee with Gwen. Make it more like a Speaker’s Bureau to have folks talk with different groups about what Prevention Works! Is – for more outreach. 7. Affirm program for June general meeting – Florence Bucierka – Structure of Comprehensive Plan and Community Readiness Survey in Clallam County. June 14. 8. Karen Meyer - Parent Ed Summit – Have been in contact with Kevin Haggerty – he is very receptive to coming over. Adjunct professor in School of Social Work at UW – Social Development Research Group – recruiting parents, parenting classes – what current programs are – wide variety. Did 2 day motivational enhancement in PA. Early October. Travel costs and put him up for a night. Would not charge a fee. Program Committee (for next year) – will meet 3:00 p.m. June 14 – Hospital Cafeteria. Grantwriting Training – June 21 – Peninsula College. Next PW Meeting – Monday, June 14. Next board meeting – June 23. Fiona – leaving – Child and Family Resource Council – Community Connections Director – leaving on July 4. This will be her last board meeting. Florence – Drug Free Communities having mentoring coalition grants – application just came out. Florence is happy to pursue it if we may be interested.
