Board of Directors Minutes

Clallam County Prevention Works! Community Coalition
Board of Directors
August 22, 2002
Olympic Medical Center/West End Outreach

Norma Turner, Susan Kirsch, Shaine Schramling, Cynthia Martin, Nita Quan, Florence Bucierka, Ida Carroll

The meeting was called to order. Ida Carroll was welcomed as the new Executive Board member via telelink.

Cynthia talked about the September 9 meeting. We were unable to secure Talaris Research Institute. We discussed having hospital and others come and share information about the services that are available to newborns in our community. We could have New Family Services among others and  become more informed about what is out there. There was some discussion about the ICC and who is now the contact for developmental screenings – it had been Susie Rapleje.

POTENTIAL SPEAKERS ON SERVICES FOR NEWBORNS:

New Family Services – Cynthia will contact.

Developmental Screenings –

Health Care – Fernellen Brown – special health care.

Midwives/Doula – Lay Midwives, certified midwives, doulas – New Family is working on Doula program

Birth to Three Program – Mary Morgan -

Peninsula Children’s Clinic – Steve or Cathy Chapman

Maternity Support Services – Sheree Ellzey (Katherine McDaniel new supervisory), First Step

Forks Community Hospital (Barb Enos & Kim) – from Forks – Ida will contact

Lower Elwha – Sue Heintz – Tribal WIC

**If others would like to have flyers handed out, please get them to us before the meeting.

Norma talked about having Jim Borte write up information on each meeting and get to newspapers.

Cynthia talked about different programming items for upcoming Prevention Works! Meetings

Norma – discussed that the November meeting is before elections and inviting legislators would be better if it was later.

We will change November meeting to Monday, November 18.

Angie Graff – there are going to be 5 nights in October through the Hospital for parents. One night will be on immunizations.

Florence discussed the Prevention Award (will be awarded at Prevention Conference in Yakima (October 24-26).

Nita Quan is presenting a workshop at the P.C. as is Cynthia Martin. Have used a lot of current programs around the state at this conference.

Need to talk more about the Non-profit issues meeting when more board members are present. Clear that there needs to be more discussion.  Norma did email a thank you to Helen Dawley and Jennifer Zaccardo.  Norma asked where she would like an honorarium rather than choosing a place for her. Cynthia talked about needing to thank people.

Susan talked about getting an announcement to Jim Borte and inviting media to the PW meeting. The importance of continuing to invite media to meetings and get the word out ahead of time. Angie asked if Forks Forum has information about meetings. George McCormick receives PW email.

Cynthia – talked about having things on local radio station.  Todd Ortloff – looking for people to fill 1:00 spot. Angie – talked about newspaper interviewing New Family Services for Women. Maybe a week before, Todd could talk with our speakers – if we get them to Todd and he’ll arrange for them to come when he has an opening. Would probably like a lead person. CYNTHIA WILL CALL TODD!

Norma talked about last Big Event Planning Meeting – what they are trying to do is raising community norms and how important that is to prevention.  Angie talked about if we cannot get Tafoya (ask Fiona – Raymond Reyes – Gonzaga). Half Native, half Hispanic – developing a support system for our kids, long term effects. Another potential.

Norma talked about Cynthia’s comment about translating the event into friendly terms and understandable for community and parents. Another potential is John Medina from Talaris. Nita talked about celebrating skate park in Sequim – hear from people who have made things happen. Other communities in our county have reported being “in the dark” on how to get things started on connecting.  Florence spoke about the need within community and Prevention Works to understand risk and protective factors – but we haven’t done a training on that for a long time. Will reinforce why Prevention Works is so unique. Basic education we need to share with community members. Ida talked about how the little projects – teen center in Forks – people can go there and volunteer for one night a week/month – little things people can do. People can see themselves fitting in to group.
