Report from Chair – Norma prepared a letter to WCPCAN on behalf of Prevention Works . . . putting together packet for legislature for license plates “Safe for Kids.” Moved and seconded to endorse “Safe for Kids” license plates.

Norma has been meeting with board members individually to discuss ideas, goals.

October Prevention Works program – October 11 – In Clallam & Jefferson Counties, all cities and all tribes. Lower Elwha received SAMHSA grant to look at Adolescent Treatment in those jurisdictions. Money to develop a plan for adolescent treatment (up to age 25). Prevention  is a segment of the grant. Adolescent Treatment Planning Grant – who did presentation in Spring, have a completed planning document. They gathered a lot of data. Cecile Greenway or Mary Ann LaFazia will be presented.

Gwen Cole – Reconfigured Membership Committee – Calling it the outreach committee – continue to assist in membership recruitment. Design some presentations for community. Outreach committee would then make presentations, increase member support. Needs to be a committee bigger than one person. Norma asked Ida to come up with someone from West End. Jim and Gwen will meet to talk about if the two groups should be combined (publicity, outreach).

Jim wrote article about Parent Educators Summit in Peninsula Daily News A6 9/21/04.

Parent Educator’s Summit – Karen – Friday, October 1 at Olympic Medical Center, 9:00 a.m.– 4:30 p.m. Drew Betz & Kevin Haggerty – settled in on the flow of the day. Meeting HHS Wed, Sept 29, 12:30-2 p.m. to put together packets. Set up 7:30 a.m. – information table, set up. Shaine – Clock Hours. Nancy Martin – Stars. Karen will be on KONP talking about Communities that Care, but will have a plug for Parent Ed Summit. It will be on Art Beat. “The Art of Parenting.”

UW response to Strategic Plan for Parent Education Committee – very surprised that there is this much activity. Had assumed that Karen Meyer and Communities that Care has instigated. Many of the other communities that are involved in the study don’t have what Clallam County has in terms of Community Coalition. Social Development Research Group – Research arm of School of Social Work.

Jim Borte – talking about potential trainings for membership (get Jim to email me what he’s got) – Survey for membership and maybe branch beyond that – individuals and agencies. Increase knowledge and skills. Chamber of Commerce – many retirees in community. Pam mentioned United Way video – could be a nice way to promote Prevention Works – interviewing agencies that are participating.

Potential November meeting – Mom’s Club – Community Project – put together bags that go home with women upon discharge – include information on breastfeeding. Candyce Jack, chairperson – ready to roll with it. Interested in community adopting World Health Organization Baby Friendly Initiative. Have 1 committee that is working on a memory box for mothers whose babies died before or after delivery.

Clallam County Literacy Council meeting tomorrow 9/23 3:30 p.m. at PA Library

Hennessey Street Play – in the past.

West End Happenings – Non-profits struggling.

Moved to have Norma go back to Network about working more closely with Prevention Works.

Sent letter to endorse Safe and Bright Futures of Clallam County for Healthy Families.

WA State Department of Health having Tobacco contract to develop strategic plan. Community Assets Form, Data that goes with the form. Needs to have available for PW Meeting in October. Read the data, then fill out questionnaire.

Next Board Meeting – Tuesday Oct. 19 at 9:00 a.m. Norma will talk about what the different board members had in terms of ideas.

Florence Community Readiness Survey – What kinds of things and where PW could be helpful in next set of processes. Comprehensive Prevention Plan – hoped to use the Communities that Care trainings for this process . . . so it wouldn’t work. She passed out West CAPT grid and steps and starred what she would like for PW to look at for strategic planning. Process in beginning – representing prevention funding entities – task force on long-term funding. Better to form the plan and then bring the group back together. Florence was asking about how to move forward with this. Karen said we may want to solicit folks to be involved in this process. Deadline to complete this is December 30. Florence will do some outreach to get a larger group – how to participate in this long-term Prevention Plan.

Drug Free – Sept. 27 we should hear.

501c3 documents will be done by Sept. 30

Meeting adjourned 9:12 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Shaine Schramling, Secretary
