Board of Directors Minutes

PW Board of Directors
9/24/03 Olympic Medical Center

Those attending were: Florence Bucierka, Norma Turner, Cynthia Martin, Angie Graff, Shaine Schramling, Pam Arnott, Jim Borte, Ida Carroll

Next PW Meeting – Monday, October 13 – Bea Kelleigh is confirmed from Project Lift-Off – Shaine will send out a blurb about her and Project Lift-Off

Network Update – Network meets next week to discuss partnership with Prevention Works! Would run simultaneously for a year to see how they would integrate. Money would stay in 2 tracks. Meet at common time and place. May evolve eventually into single thing. Would take some time to see how it would work. Family Policy Council was very supportive. Goals are similar. Membership is similar. Youth members for Network come from Forks. Cynthia – Board has responsibility to bring these people in, reminder to be friendly. Norma – encouraged that we work together. Small attendance for last PW meeting – 12 to 14 people. 2 specifically from network but have been PW meetings. Structure – every other month is combined Network/Prevention Works meeting. PW 4-5, Network 5-6. As they go along – hopefully chair of both groups would get together. Speakers would still present. Ideally for 2004-2005 Network & PW would decide together.

Florence: Network typically doesn’t have board meetings. Would we want Network chair and staff person to come to Board Meeting. Pete is current President, but not willing to continue. Their discussion Monday. Taralynn is excited. Florence will talk with Taralynn at Network meeting on Monday.

Tobacco – Florence reviewed Rachel's proposal to Prevention Works! and talked about Tobacco Prevention Coalition (Rachel Anderson) that meets monthly. She would like to PW to be her coalition. She would report monthly about tobacco issues. PW can serve in many functions without changing things. Norma – suggest we need to add as a standing committee. Norma proposes that Tobacco Coalition be standing committee of PW and that PW become coalition entity. Angie seconded. Motion carried.

Speakers for occasional evening meetings – Cynthia. PW having evening and invite John Medina from Talaris to speak. $1000 honorarium plus overnight. Would want to know how long we’d want him to speak and dates. Give 2 different dates. Has not sent in request to Foundation for Early Learning. Upon discussion with Fiona Hert about parent education – possibly Bridgett Chandler for Parent Ed summit. Once we figure out what she costs then we can submit. For John Medina – discussion for more community summit – like week night. Little theatre 250. OMC 120 opened up. Discussion of telelink in Forks instead of driving in. Ida – better in person. Norma said we should look at Little Theatre. Kathleen asked who target audience is – discussion of parents as target. March or April?

Florence Announcements –

·    Didn’t hear from anyone about the Washington State Prevention Summit – October 23 Yakima October 26. Will open up to PW membership if no one from board is interested. Prevention Interventionists in schools will be funded to go.

·    Florence is doing a session on results from Survey on Friday morning.

o       Readiness Survey – handed out

o       King County – Story Telling for Empowerment – oriented toward Native Americans and Hispanics. Promising Practice – another opportunity to look at curriculum that is oriented toward those groups.

o       Communities that Care Work Group – Training last Wednesday and Thursday for community advisory group. From that work groups looking at data, prevention resources, and there are opportunities for people who don’t want to be part of advisory group who would like to be part of work group – works just on that part and then is done. Karen Meyer is quite open to having people in the work groups. Florence will send list of trainings and topics. October 10

Norma hasn’t heard anything again from Port Gamble about upcoming meeting. May need to switch program agenda (Cynthia)

Committee Reports

Publicity – Nothing to report

Home Visiting – Pulling together budgets for Home Visiting Summit and other activities that would like to be funded to go to Foundation for Early Learning. Patty Bland ($750) – Friday, November 14 at OMC Linkletter. Moving ahead to find the funding sources. Nita was going to be checking with WCPCAN. Last 3 years we’ve had Rural Health Grant – seat time and additional expenses related to summit. Will be charging $15-20.

KEYS – In process of sending out letter to principals, superintendents, others – looking at transitioning into kindergarten. If we’re going to look across the age levels, need to help. Norma – this is what we want to do, come to PW board with budget. Good ideas for things to be done and cooperation with Readiness to Learn – everyone recognizes that transition is traumatic.

RockNRoll – no report – Fiona talked about maybe working more with Rock N Roll.

Parenting Education – Fiona out of town. Working on getting speaker suggest.

Strategic Planning – purchased Adobe Acrobat to fill out tax forms for 501c3. Jane was to meet with Charlie McClain last week to work out a few details.

Norma – suggested we get budgets from committees – she will compose an email and send it to me.
