Clallam County Prevention Works!
Community Coalition
10/23/01 8:00 a.m. First Teacher Room (Sequim)
Those attending the meeting were Nita Quan (she is
first because I left her off another list), Jan Laine, Mel Melmed, Nancy
Martin, Jane Shefler, Florence Bucierka, Diana Assumpcao, Shaine
Schramling, and Cynthia Martin
Since Jane was delayed arriving, we began without
her. We started with fortune
cookies to predict the kind of day we would each have.
Most of us had great fortunes.
It should be great day.
We decided the next meeting would be on Tuesday,
November 13 because the 12th was a holiday.
We discussed involvement with school districts as
part of Prevention Works! The
new superintendent from Port Angeles is Gary Cohn; he indicated his wife
might be interested in coming to Prevention Works!
Her primary interest may be in KEYS.
We want to encourage involvement from all the school districts.
We discussed extending a more personal invitation to the
superintendents and board members. Mel will work on this. Shaine
will get her a list of board members and superintendents.
There are certainly some other key people in the district who
should be involved. We might
want to tell them about both the November and December meeting (November
having school focus from PA and December with the Power Point presentation
on Prevention Works!) Jane
and Nita will work on the refreshments and to have something special for
December especially.
Nita brought up the fact that there are still people
who aren’t sure what we do and what is the difference between Prevention
Works and Rock and Roll and KEYS. She
suggested we put something in the newspaper about “What is Prevention
Works!” Maybe we do need more articles in paper and on radio.
Nancy explained that Family Friendly business group will be talking
about Prevention Works! when it visits service clubs in January.
The new brochure should be helpful to making the differences
between the groups clear. Florence
said Jennifer has a power point presentation on Prevention Works!
We discussed using this at the December meeting which might be
slightly more informal. Anyone
having names of someone who should receive this kind of invitation, should
contact Cynthia to get the names to Mel.
At the November meeting we will have presentations
from the Washington, D. C. Conference.
We might also want to include the Readiness to Learn grant in the
PA School District. We will
ask Mary Jacoby to once again set up for telelinking.
The need to have these set up early so we can get
publicity out and put more effort into getting people to the meetings was
brought up. We need to really
hype people who will speak for the general meeting.
We have lost a lot of school folks as part of the meeting.
Diana suggested this should have had a more training portion of
this meeting. Maybe share the
45 minutes be shared between two groups. This was a model of the meeting to attract people to the
meeting. Maybe we should do
30 minutes for presentations and the rest for the business meetings.
The meeting should start on time and get out in time.
It was suggested we spend 15 minutes on DC and 15 minutes on
Readiness to Learn. Looking ahead at the se meetings we made some tentative
commitments:
- November
13 meeting (a new date) will
be with 20 minutes each for Washington D. C. Conference and for the
Readiness to Learn Grant (Sandy McIntosh and Mary Morgan)
- December
11 meeting will be the power point presentation on Prevention Works
- January
8 will be from all groups providing services to children with special
needs. Nancy Martin will
work on this and will contact all the groups in the county who may be
providing services.
- February
12 (One suggestion was to ask school districts to present on programs
for preschool age children that each district has)
- March
undecided
- April
(Child Abuse Prevention Month seemed an ideal time for this
presentation) will be CASA for 30 minutes with questions from the
group being submitted to Diana Assumpcao such as what types of cases
are appointed guardian ad litems, who gets one, and the differences
between one county to the next.
The use of mini forums generated lots of enthusiasm
from the group.
The next meeting for the Big Event will be at
Bonnie’s Bakery at 8 a.m. on November 19.
Make sure everyone has sent in their registration for
the Parent Education Summit to Cynthia.
