County Prevention Works! Community Coalition Those attending today’s meeting included Florence Bucierka, Nancy Martin, Jane Shefler, Susan Suprenant, Don Corson, Nita Quan, and Cynthia Martin. The goal for today’s meeting was to discuss the coming annual meeting. The following are some of the random ideas discussed. Don Corson who will be facilitating that meeting talked about other groups that he had done some facilitating for other groups. Jan Laine, Jane Sheffler, and Don had met previously so he was somewhat aware of the general needs for this annual meeting. Don asked what the group felt we needed to have happen at this meeting. Our needs are to have an inspirational meeting, to look at what we have been doing, and keep the momentum going. A couple of people mentioned the need to make sure we keep things going. They see things as at a pivotal point. Nancy discussed that the committees were at the core of the organization. The importance of bringing agencies together was one of the reasons the group began. Florence spoke more positively about what is happening currently. Other’s disagreed on what the group is doing. Need to celebrate the 85 things that are being done not the 3 things you aren’t doing was what Don said. He said that “If prevention works were to lose all the primary leaders would the group go on.” The group answered yes. Go back to why you are here. Make sure that all the mission statement and goals do not get in the way of where they were going. Nita discussed the importance of using the creative energy that exists in the group. Format where we can imagine together what other new and incredible things we can do within our framework. She sees this as a generating ideas group and a cross fertilization of ideas. Florence discussed the need to look at all we had done on changing this organization by changing the structure of the board. Nita discussed mind mapping. Don talked about our discontent as one issue. Diana spoke about the changes in the community as a result of the group. Nita discussed the changes in the community as a result of the collaboration. The openness of the groups working together was strongly discussed. We want the meeting to be fun. Jane discussed the last annual meeting where she came out very upset because we had thing on the list that were not part of our mission. Florence suggested listening posts. People who were the listening posts couldn’t speak. In the past we have had about 30-40 people. Could serve dinner at the end. Don talked about looking ahead for 5 years. Give thoughts to some longer term goals of Prevention Works! Nancy talked about what do we want to do…not activities and not philosophical. Don talked about the need for the intermediate goals by being more specific about 5 years goal. Whether we are a part of a coalition or a collaboration, the length of the meeting, and the need to have at least snacks and drinks were discussed. Florence brought up the need to have a coalition measurement survey. Nita drew a car to show how we are not focusing on what we have accomplished. Don’s conclusion would take the group on a five-year model and then look for assignments that would meet those objectives. The need to have a different look at the presidency was discussed. Several people felt it was not necessary to have a single president and might in fact be good to have different people take over the function of the president. The issue of paying a webmaster was once again brought up. Nita Quan recommended that we suggest to the group that we approve hiring Shaine Schramling as a webmaster. Nita moved and Diana seconded that we hire Shaine for the position and the group approved sending it to the bigger group. The possibility of a portion of this being paid by drug free money was brought up and Florence seemed open to that possibility. The meeting was adjourned. Respectfully submitted, Cynthia Martin |
