Prevention Award Discussion

September Meeting: Discussion about having Talaris guy speak. Nita talked about just seeing girl scouts meeting in public place. Nita talked about maybe doing something different instead of parent education committee – more of a public thing. Jane talked about her concerns with doing a kick off event different than a regular meeting and the fact that we need a regular meeting. Susan talked about membership – wanting to do things creatively to increase membership. Fiona talked about piggybacking on Dream Playground – 900 volunteers will be used.

Discussion of presence of Prevention Works! at Dream Playground as well as having a September meeting. Talked about sub group for programming for Prevention Works! Fiona, Elna, Cynthia, Shaine, Susan will work on this. Meeting Tuesday, July 30 at 2:30 p.m. at Bonnie's Bakery. Susan discussed wanting to have more publicity about speakers and general meetings. And adding the tag line that meetings are open to everyone.

Discussion about PA Today Web Site – addin Salinda Barkous to PW mailing list. 2 Staff from Family Policy Council have been invited (Laura & Trudy) to attend an upcoming Prevention Works! Meeting.

Susan – saw no changes that needed to made to membership on Strategic Plan.

Strategic Plan Discussion: Florence talked about the strategic plan, vision and mission sections were brought to the board. There had been no bringing the strategic plan to the membership. Board has not been approved. It had been assumed that it had been approved. No official vote had been taken. Next step would be to do a multi-year plan. Norma’s thought is that the board will review a section each time at a meeting to keep it fresh in our minds. Nita asked if membership needs to approve it but nothing in the bylaws about that. We know that there are some revisions that need to be made. The Strategic Plan came out of annual meeting a couple years ago but this past year's facilitator decided not to review it at the  annual meeting and that is why we are looking at it now. John moved we approve the Strategic Plan. Jim seconded. No further discussion. All in favor.

Committee Reports:

Strategic Planning: July 30 4:00-6:00 p.m. To discuss tax status at Juvenile Services. Currently Prevention Works is 501 c 6. CPA coming in to discuss different options for Prevention Works. Opportunity for people to ask questions.  When Laura Brogden facilitated annual meeting 2 years ago. Vote taken on if there was enough information to make a decision. Has been an ongoing issue. Strategic Planning Committee would like to recommend that no decision be made. Have information come back to board. Working on facilitator – maybe Laura Brogden, Helen Dawley. Ask for RSVP. Florence emailed other prevention list serves for feedback. Add that no vote will be taken in.

Cynthia discussed importance of filling out Children’s Alliance Priorities that was recently e-mailed.

Florence discussed Fostering Resiliency Training – email was sent out. Board approved co-sponsoring with Juvenile Services in terms of publicity and possibly duplication of handouts.

8/16/02 – Developing Healthy Communities – with Bob McCardle.

Nita discussed maybe increasing public presence with Prevention Works! T-shirts.

Florence: There is a database of community coalitions by zip codes. Office of Drug Court Policy. Florence signed up Prevention Works!

Elna discussed maybe developing logo for t-shirts.

Nita discussed idea of : What does prevention means to me? Can be many things – informing people about meth in community, working together to build a children’s playground.

Jane can get caps reasonably priced – has a source to get good quality things.  Hats very visible. Laurel Black, Kelsey Redland – very good.  Designed logo for Clasp, High Tide.  Jane will call her. Needs piece of letterhead.  Elna knows kids that have designed logos.

John talked about having booths at different event. Farmer’s Market – Wednesday in PA. Could maybe use volunteers for that. Sherry discussed having Americorps volunteers or Soroptimists work on that.

Big Event: Next meeting August 5 at 8:30 a.m. at Hospital. Meeting at hospital so Angie can attend – plus it keeps the hospital involved.  Decided to a true big event – all day forum like a couple years ago. Looking at Terry Tafoya.  Committee would be working at finding a second speaker. Would not be hooked into OPAEYC.  If collaborate with them, would be separate.  Takes a lot of planning – need a lot of people to help. We’re primary sponsor and get other help. Mona Locke as possibility. Summer Reading Challenge from Governor. MotherRead, FatherRead – workshops within format. Storytellers. Theme – maybe Literacy. March or April. Bring in Soroptimists (Jean Fairchild).

Fiona will talk with Patty about playground – block for Prevention Works! To help build playground.

Respectfully submitted,

Shaine Schramling
