Sandi MacIntosh, PA School District Readiness to Learn Gave a Presentation
     PASD Readiness to Learn Grant Received (Sandi MacIntosh coordinator) – used to teach 4th & 5th grade in PASD Mary Morgan also works on it. Targeting K & 1st grade families. She provided handout. Readiness to learn mission: To create a committed continuing partnership among schools, families and communities that will provide opportunities for all young people to achieve at their highest learning potential; live in a safe, healthy and civil environment; and grow into productive community members. 

Goals of Grant (Successful in School; Healthy; Safe in the Home and Neighborhood)

10% come to school ready to learn. 

Will be having home visiting for families, for more information

Grant is dependent upon working together of community agencies as well as schools. Consortium members are from varied group.
Links for preschool children who would benefit from early intervention – Popsicle social, more activities toward end of year that will be coming to the school district
If you’d like to come – 3:00 p.m. Fridays in the Library (once a month) – 11/16/01

·        Referrals can come from anywhere (doesn’t have to be from teacher) – 2 Year Grant

·        Forks has had Readiness to learn for 9 years

·        Norma Turner asked about age level of brochures

Drug Abuse Conference
Mel Melmed & Shaine Schramling - Drug Abuse Prevention Conference in Washington D.C.

  • A lot was related to middle school age.

  • A lot of barriers when communities try to implement best practices in drug prevention
  • A lot of discussion about Protective Factors
  • Sequim bought communities that care survey, Port Angeles S.D. was funded, Forks in 1999
  • The longer first use is delayed the better
  • Looked at link between research and practice

Home Visitors Committee
          Home Visitors Summit – January 18 – Lorraine Gray Keynote Speaker, MSW – working with Native American Famlies first half of day. Round table at lunch. Representatives from tribes to do panel. Jessica Wasnock coordinator – has been ill. Next meeting Tuesday 11/20 10:00 a.m. Hospital is going to work together so speakers come day before to talk with hospital staff.

Family Support America – Work & Family Award, doing what PW! Is doing with Family Friendly Businesses. National Award

Rene not present. Meeting Monday 11/19/01 8:00 a.m. Bonnie’s. Need people to help start coordinating. Before we know it will be March 2. Need to work with OPAEYC

Family Friendly Business
            Fiona – at Steve Methner’s office (State Farm). Good enthusiasm. Jim Haguewood, Economic Development Council – have pushed timeline back a bit. Looking at preceding with mail, press releases, alerting community that campaign is beginning.

Early Learning Foundation Grant

            Cynthia – 7 groups participating. Limiting involvement as of last meeting. With help of United Way, Mary Jacobs will be Grantwriter – First Step, Healthy Families, Sunshine & Rainbows, JST, PMF, Health & Human Services, Lutheran Community Services) – Social Nights with speakers. Each organization is looking at how to submit. $250,000 grant request. Nita spoke about the cooperation in the planning process which probably has to do with the fact that everyone has been working as a team through Prevention Works!

            Fiona – submitted a grant after Jeanne Anderson to request funding for 4 conferences we hoped to have (Parent Ed, Home Visiting, Judy Ford – March 1st & 2nd with OPAEYC). For $8600, were awarded $5000. Equitably distribute the $5000 - $1250 to each conference. Money will be forthcoming.

KEYS

            Cynthia – met last week. Judith Morris has flyer. Sequim, Forks, Port Angeles. Flyer going around about Read Now – encouraging Literacy – don’t forget about giving books as gifts. Going to churches, other groups with holiday baskets.  If you would like copies, or a white one, let Judith Morris with United Way know about it.  KEYS is trying to get other groups involved. Trying to find out what schools are doing to encourage learning with elementary school children.

ROCK N ROLL

            Jody – Minutes on web site.  Next meeting Tuesday, 11/20/01 Jim Borte. December 13 meeting.  Robert Wood Johnson – December 6 site visit – going to award 10 grants, in last 16. Alternative Habilitative Treatment for Substance Abusing Youth. Year 1 – Planning year $250,000. Renew up to 4 years. Recovery house for s.a.y. Treatment center on peninsula. If anyone

MEMBERSHIP

            178 members. Goal is to alert people to meetings, let them know of different guest speakers. Membership packets available to first time members

PUBLICITY

            Jim Borte – Parent Ed Suumit, State Prevention Yakima, News Releases going out, Family Friendly Business Initiative – need help publicizing, let them know at least 3 weeks in advance

STRATEGIC PLANNING

            Vision and mission. Introduce goals. Worked within annual meeting. Notes on Web Site. Carol has resigned as chair. Brenda Butterfield taking over.

YAKIMA – State Prevention Conference
Jane Shefler, Steve Tharinger, Mel, Diana Assumpcao, Florence Bucierka went to Yakima
Conference – lots of youth there. Speakers and activities.

Announcements

            Cynthia – Please get information (handouts) ahead of time so we can get it to Forks
            Norma – county budget hearings are coming up, wants all to participate, state & federal cuts
            Mike Doherty -DSHS Cut List – 178 pages long. Florence can e-mail it. Nita talked about eliminating maternity support services completely which is a huge chunk of home visiting services in county. Need to do a lot of advocating. 1st time in 10 or 11 years that MSS being eliminated – Mary Selecky is looking at centralizing cuts in Olympia rather than local cuts. DSFS (Karen Kremkau) – trying to make use of providers – 15% cut, Family Preservation Services might be cut completely. 

Pam Arnott – NCAST training (Nita) – in January. Information coming soon with dates, times. Thursdays in January (10th) open.

Fiona – Karen Bosley (PEPS) – have asked Early Learning Foundation for support for PEPS. They are actively looking for money. Need letter from board.

Nita – Zero to 3 conference in San Diego at end of the month, another indication of collaboration. HHS, ICC, Rural Health Grant $.

Florence – Community Network, Drug Free Communities Grant – due 16th of this week.

Prevention Works! Specialist:  Florence Reported they are checking references.
