Prevention Works! Minutes

Clallam County Prevention Works!  Community Coalition
December 10, 2001 Winter Celebration Meeting
Telelinked Between West End Outreach and Olympic Medical Center

The meeting began with a quick overview of the plans for the afternoon.  The idea was to make this a social event with special cookies brought by many individuals to have a special day.  It began with the power point presentation on Prevention Works!  The group seemed appreciative of the effort put into this presentation that is being used for other presentations throughout the state.

After the presentation, Jane Shefler called the meeting to order. Those attending were Jane, Mary Jacoby, Betsy Cadwell, Angie Graff, Bill Jevne and guest, Cherie Reeves-Sperr, Chris Borchers, Debra Sharp, Diana Assumpaco, Elna Kawal, Janet Williams, Janice Laine, Jennifer Charles, Jim Borte, Judith Morris, Lillian Nesse, Mel Melmed, Martha Hall, Nancy Martin, Nita Quan, Pam Arnott, Tanya Barndt, Tom Anderson, and Cynthia Martin.

Debra Sharp, the new county Prevention Specialist was introduced.

Elna Kawal reported on KEYS and the efforts of this committee to develop a community calendar of all the activities related to literacy that are being done in Clallam County.  She also discussed the activities related to reading that are taking place at any activities related to literacy to encourage reading.  They are also accepting donations of new and gently used books for distribution.

The funding from the Early Learning Foundation to support the four conferences we are doing this year was discussed.  They gave $5000 for the Big Event, OPAEYC, Home Visiting, and Parent Education conferences.

The status of the Early Learning Foundation Grant Committee was discussed.  The excellent contribution from United Way to fund the grant writer, Mary Jacobs, and what an excellent job she has done were brought up.  The grant will be taken in on Wednesday.  Seven groups participated in a very harmonious way in bringing about the cooperative efforts of this committee.

Nita Quan reported that DCFS will do a training for home visitors working with depressed parents which will even include seat time.

The Carolyn Foundation was discussed because of a need to make changes.  United Way had agreed to administer and pay bills for 2% of the grant.  The issues United Way is expected to handle has increased.  United Way would like this fee to be increased to 5%.  It was moved, seconded and unanimously passed to increase the fee to 5%.

Nancy Martin said that over 60 children in foster care in Clallam County are not currently being chosen by any families or agencies for holiday gifts.  Anyone who is willing to do this should contact Larry Hayden from DCFS at 565-2240 (I think).  If this number is incorrect, contact Nancy Martin for a better one but I wanted to get the minutes out as quickly as possible so many of you could take one of these children.  Each child expresses one desire and some needed items.  Everyone is supposed to buy 3 things and they need to be delivered to DCFS by next Monday,

The next meeting is Monday, January 14 at 4:00 at Olympic Medical Center.

Thank you all for the delicious cookies.  The left over cookies were taken by agencies to use at Holiday Celebrations of young families.
