Education Subcommittee - March
16th, 2001
Bonnie’s Bakery – Port Angeles, Wa.
The meeting convened
at 9:05 am.
Those present:
Cynthia Martin, Diana Assumpcao, Rosemary NewDay, Angie Graff, Karen
Junnell, Nita Quan, and Fiona Thom Hert.
Caroline Foundation Funding:
Discussion on the funding and the need for less formal and restricted
programming. Recommendations
for the RFP committee are: 1) RFP committee nominated and voted on by
membership. 2) Matching funds – eliminate this component.
Discussion ensued on redundancy and the money being utilized in a
more productive way.
Reports
from First Step, Healthy Families, and First Teacher on their funding
awards.
Web Development:
Discussion on Prevention Works! taking over web site development.
Shaine and Cynthia are working on this.
Cynthia reported on OMC’s development of their website.
Requests were made to email Cynthia or Shaine links and calendars
of offerings in parent education to be published on the PW website.
Incredible Years Training:
Cynthia reported on the possibility of offering training in The Incredible
Years, a parent education curriculum by Carolyn Webster-Stratton of UW.
It is available in Spanish and we would pursue this and the
curriculum for parents of children 3-5.
2nd Annual Summit: Ideas were generated for possible topics
and keynote speakers. Nita
suggested parent/child interaction guidance.
She recommended Mary Cliff from Spokane and Marion Birch.
Fiona suggested non-traditional approaches to parent education and
teaching methods. Fiona also
discussed her contact with Jan Faull at the Talaris Institute. Jan has
marked this date on her calendar and is available. Comments addressed the
need to expand on brain development if this was the keynote topic.
Fiona said she would make contact with Jan and have a discussion
about her topic and the applicability to the potential audience.
