Prevention Works!
June 22, 2001

Next Meeting: Friday, August 3, 2001 at Bonnie’s at 10:30 am

The meeting convened at 9:05.  Those present:  Fiona Thom Hert, Diana Assumpcao, Cynthia Martin, and Joan Henry.

Cynthia shared the new First Teacher publication which lists all the library offerings for parents.  The materials are cross-referenced by topics in parent education.  Cynthia will explore putting the reference listing on the First Teacher web site and linking it to PW’s site under parent education.

Incredible Years Training Follow-up:  Fiona asked for a follow-up report on the Incredible Years training.  Cynthia reported on the success and enthusiasm of participants.  Several requests were that the training was longer.  Fiona asked who would have copies of the tapes and she will contact the Community Network, Jefferson Elementary School, Headstart, the Health Department to verify their copies and curricula.  This information will then be posted so parent educators may access these tapes for their use.

Diana mentioned that she was written a grant to provide funding for teaching two series of The Incredible Years.  Discussion followed on team teaching with someone who has not been trained with someone who attended the Seattle training.   Fiona would also contact Verna Henderson at Lower Elwha Headstart about interest in the Incredible Years program for next year.

Summit Survey Information (See attachment for full survey): Fiona brought the hard copies of the electronic survey.  There were 29 responses.  87% reported that they were planning on attending this year’s summit.  Fiona commented on the turnaround for the survey – two weeks – but after reviewing the comments and contributions was very pleased with the depth of comments and suggestions for improvement for this year’s upcoming summit.  A review was made of the survey particularly the question #4 which asked: “ What is the most important reason for you to attend the parent education summit?”

Summit Planning:

í      Keynote Speaker: Based on the feedback, Fiona will pursue a keynote speaker who can present on experiential parent education techniques and ideas.  Fiona will contact Libby Wagner at the College and talk with Rosemary NewDay and Nancy Bluestein-Johnson about their experience at a Seattle workshop entitled “50 Ways to Leave Your Lectern” which they reported was excellent and extremely relevant and applicable for teaching parent education.  Discussion followed on if a keynote speaker is not available from out of the area on this topic that a panel of our local experts be utilized.  Fiona will pursue this.

í      Summit Title: A title was explored and the title would be decided at the next meeting.  Cynthia requested a title that was appealing to a broad range of participants.

í      Curricula Sharing: Discussion continued on a more formal approach to sharing of curricula.  It was felt by the committee that several presenters needed to be available to discuss the programs and that it was not adequate to simply have the materials available for participants to browse.

í      Clock Hours:  It was felt that this matter needed to be initiated earlier than last year.  Fiona will make contact with Karen Junnell, Ellen Fetchiet or others who might be able to facilitate this for the summit.  Other tasks necessary for the summit were registration, refreshments, evaluations, and packets.   It was decided to form task forces and to eliminate the word “committee” from our summit planning vocabulary!

í      Breakout sessions:  Discussion on breakout sessions will be held at the next meeting, August 3, 2001.

Matrix:  Fiona and Cynthia will set a date to review and revise matrix.  Printing of the matrix may not be necessary as it will be available on the web as a resource.  Fiona and Cynthia will work on simplifying the materials and information available.

Trainings for 2001-2002:  Fiona asked for any information on upcoming parent education trainings or curricula trainings. It was felt by the committee that with the Home Visiting Summit, the Parent Education Summit, the Big Event, and the Olympic Peninsula Association for the Education of Young Children Conference in March 2002 that there would be adequate training opportunities for professionals and parents in our community.

The meeting adjourned at 10:20 am.
