Tempest
PRESENTATION: John Reed & Ross
Turkus hosted the group at the new North Olympic Youth Center, Tempest.
The meeting began with festive treats, music and conversation.
Following the meeting, Ross provided a tour of the facility.
The teens and other workers have done a fabulous job remodeling the old
Aggies building into a most impressive club for teens.
In order to become a
member, youth must:
§
Fill out a Membership Application
§
Take part in an orientation
weekend
§
Volunteer 4 hours per month at
Tempest for planning an upkeep
§
Volunteer 2 hours per month for a
community project
§
Pay dues of $15 per month (no
teen will be excluded if they are unable to pay, alternatives will be
discussed)
§
Respect the rights of other
members
Youth members designed the
Rights and Responsibilities

High
quality facility by caring about the
facility, conserving power and resources.
§
Respect
for Tempest’s neighbors
by respecting buildings and pedestrians next to Tempest…
§
A
safe environment by treating others and the facility with respect..
§
Physical
Safety by maintaining a drug and
weapon free environment, violence free…
§
Emotional
Safety by respecting boundaries and comfort levels…
§
Equality
by respecting diversity and welcoming new members of all peer groups
§
A
supportive environment by offering
to help others, asking for help when needed…
§
A
right to be heard actively listening to other members, giving and accepting respectful
feedback
§
Express
ideas by saying what you believe and
accepting the thoughts and ideas of others…
§
Have
a difference of opinion by agreeing
to disagree
§
Privacy
by respecting others need to be alone or choice not to share personal
information
§
Confidentiality
by sharing stories about yourself with others, and refraining from gossip…
§
A
clean environment by disposing of litter properly, encouraging others to do the same…
§
Access
to opportunities by taking part in
Tempest events and classes and making suggestions…
§
Mutual
respect between adults and teens
through open, honest communication
§
Respectful
and appropriate display of affection
by displaying affection in ways that will not offend or exclude others…
§
Experience
appropriate language and freedom from pornography
by refraining from the use of put-downs and curses…
