Strategic Planning/Policies and Procedures Committee Meeting Report
Wednesday, July 17, 2001
Proposed Plan for March 2001 – February, 2002

The committee met at the Family Development Center from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM.

Members present: Florence Bucierka, Brenda Butterfield, Connie Hyatt, Jan Laine, and Carol Huard.

The committee received the minutes of the last meeting and reviewed what it had done on July 11, 2001. The vision and mission statements were approved and each goal was tested to insure it related to the vision and mission. The ideas from the annual meeting were incorporated as strategies for the goals. *

Vision of Prevention Works!

Promote awareness and activities, which contribute to the elimination of substance abuse, child abuse & neglect, and violence.

Mission Statement of Prevention Works!

To reduce risk factors which lead to substance abuse, child abuse and neglect, and violence by assisting families with children from conception through four years of age; by strengthening protective factors and enhancing the resilience of children, youth, and families in Clallam County.

Goals of Prevention Works!

1.      Encourage community groups to work together toward the Clallam County Prevention Works! Community Coalition Mission.

§         Secure collaborative funding, shared agency space, cross training, set the expectation for collaborative initiatives, recognize collaborative initiatives, board of directors provide leadership, integrate systems, promote inter-agency coordination on a cases by case basis, endorse collaborative efforts, develop inter-agency service teams for families, training on how to collaborate, ropes course (Networking)

§         Calendars of parent education and home visitors services-for purposes of referring

§         Work with law and justice portion to have prevention as part of their mindset

§         Advocate for health care access for families (dental, mental, medical)

§         Cross training/resource sharing between disciplines (home visiting, parent ed., community health nurse)

2.      Bridge the gap between research and practice through the development and implementation of ongoing prevention activities.

Educate on research based practices, recognize agencies that are using research based practices, develop a prevention resource library from which cost and service effective prevention strategies can be created, find means for educating the public about this goal, PW! Website, invite “experts” to the community, connect to UW, research community, foundation, corporations, etc, incubator for the community, promote the coalition for state & national recognition, funding follows research based practices. (Direct Service)

3.      Actively solicit prevention-focused projects and funding.

Train providers on fund raising and grantwriting, secure $ to hire community grantwriter to support coalition projects. (Funding)

§         Task force for long term funding

§         Make the 501 © 3 decision (times 3)

4.      Provide educational opportunities to realize the mission of Prevention Works!

Provide prevention focused educational opportunities. (Marketing and Training)

Community norming around prevention

§         PR and marketing of who we are as an organization (video 10-12 minutes)

§         Cross training/resource sharing….see goal 1

§         Diverse training for diverse parent educators for diverse parents of diverse children (need for multiple types of parents education-parent to parent; curriculum 

5.      Advocate for research based prevention activities to policy makers, providers, community members, and businesses. (Action/Advocacy)

§         Community norming around prevention.

§         Work with law and justice portion to have prevention as part of their mindset.

§         Advocate for health care access….see 1

6.      Encourage expansion of parent education, home visiting, and quality childcare. (Focus Areas)

7.      Initiate and facilitate the development of a Community Prevention Plan. (Vision)

·         Substitute “Chemical Dependency” for “Substance Abuse?”

Reminder regarding the Mission Statement

The goals must be measurable.

a)      How do we reduce risk factors?

b)      How will we strengthen protective factors?

c)      How do we enhance the resilience of children, youth, and families?

The committee will meet on Tuesday, July 31, 2001 at the Family Development Center from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
